(Side note with only possible complaint about the Sven Saw: I have not, in the many years I have used it, lost the wing nut that holds the saw together in the leaves on the ground or in the dark, which would make the saw inoperable. It might be a good idea to carry an extra one)
When I was looking for a backpacking saw, I wanted something that was as close to a real, full-size saw as I could find. This ruled out those chain-style saws (basically a chainsaw blade that you pull back and forth manually), and the other saws which are basically dagger-shaped. I wanted something I could rip through thick hardwood with on a regular basis with no problems. This saw is exactly that: You can grip it with both hands, and you can easily tear right through enough firewood for a weekend camping trip.
This isn't some "emergency" saw that will suffice in a pinch, this is a serious saw that you can rely on using every day.
When it is folded up, the sharp blade is hidden, so you don't need to put this in any sort of case or sleeve. It is also very solid when folded, it doesn't rattle and the blade will never open accidentally.
The folded length is a tad long for my liking, but it's not bad enough for me to opt for the 15" model instead. I may actually get the 15" saw as well, for those times when I do some seriously ultra-light backpacking.
One other reviewer also pointed out that he added a washer to the wingnut, and I have to agree. After putting together the saw only twice, there was noticeable gouging in the aluminum from where the wingnut rubs the frame. I added a washer to it, and it is far easier to tighten the wingnut now, and it doesn't damage the aluminum frame anymore. I can't believe they didn't include this with the saw, but it's a very easy fix anyways.
Hands down this is the best bow style saw you'll ever own. I've used many different saws, you'll never get me to waste my time with one of those cheap folding saws and axes and hatchets are far too heavy and require too much effort to use. Sven's are durable, easy to pack, safe for you and your gear when folded yet sturdy and quick to assemble when needed. The blade is sharp, very sharp and cuts 3' and 4' logs with ease. I've even cut down 10' diameter trees with this saw.
23-1/8" long folded/nested; disassembled 21-3/16" is the longest piece with the end bolt folded over; still a little too long for a 7 gallon bucket so I'm getting a 15" one. I filed down the slightly sharp corners and edges and taped over that rolled pin to help preserve backpacks.
The end bolt pulls the blade into a tight slot in the handle for a solid hold and I stuck two strips cut from a plastic lid into the front of the groove to pinch that end of the blade tight so my cuts don't wander around like they do with a wobbly blade. Still nice and sharp after dozens of campfires and occasionally removing a log from a trail. It is a little heavy but lighter camp saws I've tried haven't come close to its durability.
I tried the 15" model and it seems to take about twice the sawing effort/time as the 21" so I need to balance that against the weight and packed size. Definitely the 21" in winter though.
When folded the blade is protected and will not cut other items in your pack. I had no concerns packing this in my dry bag.
Added 12/31/12, I have used this on 4 more outings and it has become a trusted tool. It has held up and I do not expect performance to change with added use.
I keep it by the front door because it is so useful, and it is very compact when folded and incredibly light. It's easy to throw in a car or truck and the triangular shape makes it a very efficient cutting tool - easy to get into hard to reach places.
Everyone who has seen my Sven Saw over the last 35 years has wanted one. A friend who does disaster relief work is thinking all their workers should have them for easy brush removal in situations where they can't get in heavy equipment.
If you're considering getting a Sven saw, don't consider it any longer, just buy it. Your only regret will be that you didn't have it sooner.
