“Delivering juicy details with unrelenting speed and force” (Jonathan Allen), Swamp Monsters is the wild inside story of how Donald Trump made a star of Ron DeSantis and then set out to destroy him—a struggle for supremacy that has turned Florida into the crucible of the new GOP and of America's future—by “one of the keenest and best-sourced observers of Florida’s political maelstrom” (Rick Wilson).

Ron DeSantis was struggling through Florida’s political wilderness when, in late 2017, Donald Trump extended his hand. Ambitious but charmless, DeSantis was a relatively obscure figure even within his own state’s Republican party, and an unlikely pick for the GOP’s gubernatorial nomination. But when Trump took to Twitter and praised him as “a brilliant young leader” and “a true FIGHTER,” everything changed—for DeSantis, for Florida, and for the country. Today, as Florida governor and a GOP presidential frontrunner, DeSantis sits within striking distance of the Oval Office, and his onetime benefactor has turned into his most formidable opponent. Florida, meanwhile, has mutated from the country’s biggest swing state into the stronghold of the extremist wing of the Republican party—a place where COVID denialism and culture-war antics have been battle-tested, and where the nation’s political future might just be forged.

In
Swamp Monsters, veteran Florida journalist and NBC News senior national politics reporter Matt Dixon pulls back the curtain on the titanic clash between a one-time kingmaker and a would-be king, showing how the battle between Trump and DeSantis has escalated, how it might end—and what it will mean for the country.

"An enjoyable, if horrifying, soap opera."―The New York Times Book Review

“Dixon… has a deep well of sources to explain [Florida’s] governor… Trump once called DeSantis a ‘brilliant cookie.’ Read within to watch him crumble.”―
Kirkus Reviews

“Matt Dixon is one of the keenest and best-sourced observers of Florida’s political maelstrom. In
Swamp Monsters, he captures the war between Donald Trump and his former apprentice, Ron DeSantis, with insight, clarity, and deeper analysis than anyone else. Florida is America’s laboratory of crazy ideas, and Matt is your tour guide.”―Rick Wilson, co-founder of the Lincoln Project and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything Trump Touches Dies

Swamp Monsters is the right book at the right time by the right author. "Swamp Monsters: Trump vs. DeSantis―the Greatest Show on Earth" delves into how Florida Governor Ron DeSantis rose to power under the influence of Donald Trump. It uncovers their conflicts, behind-the-scenes gossip, and Trump's efforts to undermine DeSantis, particularly after January 6, 2021, when Trump's favorability among Republicans plummeted. Despite Trump's association with the "Drain the Swamp" slogan from 2016, the book portrays both Trump and DeSantis as complex figures within the GOP, each exhibiting "swampy" behaviors in their own right. Additionally, it offers deep insights into DeSantis's character and his impact on Florida politics.

For those intrigued by the Trump-DeSantis relationship, "Swamp Monsters" thoroughly examines it, including Trump's perspective on DeSantis. Trump's belief that DeSantis owes him for his success, along with his attempts to hinder DeSantis's ambitions, particularly during his 2024 presidential bid, adds intrigue to the story.

"Swamp Monsters" is a gripping, informative, and enjoyable read, offering a thrilling journey through political maneuvering. It's a must-read for anyone fascinated by the Trump-DeSantis dynamic and American politics. Be prepared for a narrative that transcends typical political tales, providing a fresh perspective on the heart of American politics.

After Ron DeSantis beat Charlie Crist in 2022 by nearly 20% for Florida Governor, we all thought Florida’s time in the political spotlight was over. But it turned out to be just the start of one of our most interesting political chapters: the fight for the soul of the Republican Party between the former President Donald J. Trump and the young and popular Florida Governor Ronald Dion DeSantis. And lucky for us, Matthew Dixon — the well sourced founding bureau chief of Florida Politico — is here to chronicle it all.

Swamp Monsters opens with a history based on behind the scenes interviews with longtime Florida political hands to explain how the onetime swing state became the center of Republican politics. With that stage set, it gives us an insider account of how it all went right for DeSantis before it all went wrong.

I don’t want to spoil this breezy book that reminds me of Chris Matthew’s Hardball, but the well-sourced Dixon lands on the record quotes from people like Roger Stone (the interview hilariously melts down after a Kayne West episode) and gives you behind the scenes moments of DeSantis campaign meetings. You even learn what three fingers DeSantis used to scoop his pudding.

I can’t wait to read what Dixon writes next.

Swamp Monsters is a look into the rise of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. If you're from Florida like I am and cover the news for a living, the book won't really surprise you. There were a few tidbits that I found interesting such as the first time Trump and DeSantis battled, some insider information from former DeSantis aides, and an analysis of why DeSantis has faltered on the national stage.

The book can get repetitive sometimes in presenting facts which is probably intended for people who might not really know DeSantis well. I wish the book covered the impact of DeSantis in Florida a little more instead of quickly highlighting how he used culture wars and then moving on. Also the book only lightly covers Trump and covers him much more towards the end, but I think more insights into Trump's view of DeSantis would be great.

It's probably hard to get many people to go on the record since this is all still happening in real-time, but still it's definitely a topic that will be discussed in the future. The book paints DeSantis as a force to be reckoned with, personally I've always believed DeSantis a more of a fraud trying to paint himself as an Alpha male and some parts of the book seem to agree with that analysis.

Overall, it was a good read and not too long. It took me about a week to read it. Recommend.

Ever watched a high-stakes, high-scoring football game? Reading this book was like watching one of those. I can only hope Dixon’s first book won’t be his last. He had the challenging job of contextualizing a rapidly-evolving political situation. He succeeded in that. His resulting work will offer readers important insight into important political figures (DeSantis and Trump) and an important political state (Florida) for years to come.

Dixon’s animus towards well-credentialed scientists who questioned or disagreed with the “consensus” narrative during the pandemic makes for a tough slog through the COVID chapters, especially in light of the ongoing news revealing the actual lack of science behind many of the COVID responses, such as 6-feet social distancing. His repetition, just to beat the reader over the head with his opinions in case they missed it the first, second, or third time, is also tedious. The book could use more editing. It is otherwise amusing and entertaining for the anonymous quotes and insights. Anyone who is familiar with The Process in Tallahassee will have fun playing “guess the staffer”!

For those intrigued by the relationship between Trump and DeSantis, I am not sure there is a better book that could delve into the details of that political marriage. It's a fun and fast read.

The writing reads like a sloppy rough draft and gave me a headache. No narrative to speak of. Poorly organized. Repetitive. Not much original reporting or insight. I feel like asking for my money back. Why don’t publishers edit books anymore?
