Editorial Reviews

Season one of SWAMP PEOPLE takes you on a journey to the bayous and swamplands of America's southern heartland to witness a group of people that live on the fringes of society. They are the swamp people, and their distinct culture has its roots in the early days of America's expansion westward. The descendants of moonshiners, immigrant railroad workers and early settlers, the swamp people have inherited a legacy of self-reliance and anti-establishment values that make them true American originals, hidden from the view of the mainstream. HISTORY follows these swampers through a time of year that is crucial to their survival: alligator hunting season. At its core, this is a uniquely American story of a proud and skillful people fighting to maintain an ancient way of life in a rapidly modernizing world, despite the many perils and trials that stand in their way.

This show is just awesome! All of the people are very personable and the show is filled with action. They have a very unique culture down in the bayou and kudos to The History Channel for bringing it to the rest of us. Now days it seems like TV networks just copy one another when it comes to creating reality shows and it get's old quick. At least The History Channel got original and it payed off, big time! I can't wait for season 2, I hope this show continues for a long time.

I was born and raised in North Louisiana. I know that (as Texas Tourism Folks Like To Say) South Louisiana is whole other Country and a far cry from the red clay hills of North Louisiana but traveling the state with my parents during my youth gave me an opportunity to experience the cajun way of life.

Bottom Line.... This is a very entertaining series and certainly worth the price of the first season dvd's. For 11.00 you get ten episodes that will let you see what making a living from America's Largest Swamp is like. Thank You History Channel for making this program possible.

When I first saw the previews for this show I thought to myself that this would be a pretty neat show. Well I was blown away by how awesome it was and how intense it got. Maybe, Alligator hunting is not for everyone but the bonding a father and a son can have with each other can never be any better when your fishing or hunting and having to depend on each other each playing important roles. Being a country boy myself growing up hunting boars and spending time with the family is a bond that should never be broken.

A totally unexpected consequence of my watching this show is that it has helped me overcome the stereotype of the "dumb hick." If I had only heard one of the men or women on the show speak for a minute or two and nothing else, that negative stereotype of people who don't speak standard spoken English perfectly would have caused me to write the person off as lacking an education and mired in a sad life of perpetual poverty.

Nothing about these men and women could be farther from the truth. What they may in some cases lack in book learning they more than make up for when revealing their rich understanding of the outdoors generally and of swampland in Louisiana specifically. One man profiled could literally build an excellent boat out of various metals and tools while using as specifications nothing more than a hand drawn sketch penciled on a dog-eared piece of paper during a conversation with the prospective buyer. Each person profiled in the series is extraordinary in some way. Surrounding all of the characters is a sense of community and of family that we who haven't lived that life may never be able to comprehend. The current of love, warmth, and respect these people have for one another infuses every episode and reminds viewers of a time when rural living in America and relying on your neighbor for survival was the norm rather than the exception.

As far as the alligator killing itself is concerned, my initial thought was that I would find the actions of the fishermen/hunters deplorable. Why hunt alligators with hooks, lines, and guns? I was hoping the show would not be about trophy hunters trying to bag the biggest and most ferocious game to stuff and hang on their living room walls.

As Willie says in his bio, few people can or would want to hunt down the monsters in the bayou, but if you think you can, come on down....I wish you luck. This is my favorite new show on t.v. much to the chagrin of my wife. The cajuns are a special breed, when it comes to outdoors and wildlife. They remind me a lot of the Aussies. Troy has the most personality, Willie may be perhaps the most cajun...running around in that swamp, at night, alone, reaching into grass and pulling out deadly snakes to make a few bucks. Hello? The two brothers are funny, but I dont believe I'd spend the night. From Lisbeth to JPaul, Bruce and virtually every member of the show, thank you for great entertainment. Stay careful out there, so we dont film gator bait from a treeshaka. Choot im lizbeth!

I was born and raised and still live in the area where some of "The Swamp People" was/is filmed. Some of the films you see on Louisiana are exaggerated to draw interest of viewers, "The Swamp People" isn't. It is authentic. My uncle used to hunt a few gators a year to compensate his seafood business and accompanying him on a hunt i saw first hand what it is all about and it is identical to what "The Swamp People" shows. Its dangerous work and you have a good time doing it. My brother in law comes from the same town Troy Landry lives in and knows him personally and Troy has the same personality off camera as he does on. My nephew went to school with one of the guys on this show and I often see my best friend from high school,s father guest starring on the show. Even though this show is so close to home for me, I LOVE IT! I recommend it to anyone interested in this type of entertainment, especially the city folk.

This is season one, I can't wait for the next one. Unbelievable how those Cajuns toss those gaters around! If you like outdoor adventure in the safety of your armchair(!), you should find this facinating.
