Swamp Thing: The Complete Series
SWAMP THING follows Dr. Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but when a mysterious creature emerges from the murky marsh, she finds herself facing the nightmares of a supernatural world where no one is safe. Something unnatural is happening in the swamps outside Marais, Louisiana. When a mysterious illness strikes the town, CDC investigator (and former Marais native) Arcane is sent to investigate. At the hospital, she encounters biologist Alec Holland (Andy Bean) who believes the bizarre illness might be connected to his scientific work in the swamp for powerful businessman Avery Sunderland (Will Patton). Abby has a history with Avery and Maria Sunderland (Virginia Madsen), who still blames the young Arcane for the tragic death of her daughter years before. But with a deadly swamp-born virus out there, something is wrong in Marais right now. Along with Sheriff's Deputy Matt Cable (Henderson Wade), Abby once again crosses paths with Alec, but this time they encounter a terrifying, dark force that's not only killed intruders, but is also taking control of its victims. At Delroy's Roadhouse, Abby consults her old friend and local reporter Liz Tremayne (Maria Sten) who has a lead deep in the swamp. When Alec goes missing after investigating the unnatural experiments deep in the swamp, something else rises in his place: Swamp Thing (Derek Mears), a mysterious creature born of the depths of the swamp's mystical and terrifying secrets. With nature wildly out of balance and coming for the people of Marais, in the end, it may take some thing from the swamp to save it. Also starring Jennifer Beals as Sheriff Lucilia Cable and Jeryl Prescott as Madame Xanadu, with a special appearance by Kevin Durand as brilliant biogeneticist Jason Woodrue, this one-hour drama series is filled with Southern Gothic twists and turns and characters who are corrupted by the supernatural forces that surround the town of Marais. When these unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

This is neither the campy 80s-era movies nor the equally campy 90s TV series. The special effects and the tone are darker and more serious, as befits a horror-oriented tale. I enjoyed the story, writing, special effects, and mood & would've loved to see where it would've gone if Warner/DC let Swamp Thing be its own "thing". I guess the "corporate overlords" simply couldn't let it be.
Overall, I'm glad I didn't subscribe to the streaming service to see this (at the time), as I'd briefly considered doing. All in all, I consider getting the collected Swamp Thing DVD a bargain.

The series was surprisingly good, and it is a shame that it was cancelled so early. Swamp Thing is certainly better than most other DC series such as Gotham and The Flash. The producers clearly had a heads up that the end was near, and they wrapped up enough of the story arcs to provide a suitably satisfying finish to the series, while leaving enough loose ends that if an executive wanted to they could resurrect the series in future.
A few of those innovative elements are here and the makeup for Swamp Thing, performances (particularly Mears as old Swampy) and production values are all impressive. But in terms of the writing, what we're largely given here is a soap that goes for shock value with a rushed ending as it was cancelled and cut from 13 episodes to 10. I don't know if there wasn't time, but the effort to give it a satisfying ending appears to have been limited to rewriting the last five minutes to include some forward-looking dialogue. The way it worked out, the last couple of episodes go for fairly routine action and shock value. And fairly routine swearing doesn't serve much of a purpose except a heavy-handed attempt to be adult.
Depending on the writing, the character can either fight like any other super hero or explore his connection to the planet and his startling new existence. This is an effort that was just getting started when sadly cut short, and people are still better to simply read the Alan Moore comic and stories by other writers.
