When Nasan’s mother-in-law decides that a pilgrimage to a distant monastery may be the only solution for her failing heart, the journey sparks memories in Nasan of a life she has almost forgotten, where her interests and skills serve a purpose lost to her in Moscow. What can a Swan Princess do when she no longer wants to return to the nest? Before Nasan can answer that question, she encounters a once-vanquished foe determined to avenge himself on those he blames for his misfortunes—and realizes she has ridden right into his trap.

About the author

As a child, C. P. Lesley thought everyone told themselves stories to help themselves fall asleep. It never occurred to her that anyone would pay her for them, and for a long time, she was right--no one would. But after years of producing horrible prose, reading books about novel writing, and pestering hapless fellow-writers and friends to read her drafts, some of the advice stuck, and she finished "The Not Exactly Scarlet Pimpernel," followed by "The Golden Lynx," "The Winged Horse," "The Swan Princess," "The Vermilion Bird," and "The Shattered Drum."
She is currently working on a new series, Songs of Steppe & Forest, which follows selected Legends characters into the 1540s. When not thinking up new ways to torture her characters, she edits other people's manuscripts, reads voraciously, maintains her website, and practices classical ballet. That love of ballet also finds expression in her Tarkei Chronicles series, "Desert Flower" and "Kingdom of the Shades."

"The Swan Princess" is the third book in the Legends of the Five Directions series, set in 16th-century Russia and featuring a mix of Russian and Tatar characters. It's a sort of family drama mixed with historical romance, but extremely thoroughly researched historical romance with a number of sympathetic Muslim protagonists. So while in some ways Nasan is your stereotypical feisty tomboy forced into an arranged marriage, the setting makes these books stand out from run of the mill historical romances. The characters, particularly Nasan, are interesting and relatable, and the background setting is superb. Recommended for anyone interested in Russian history or culture, as well as fans of historical romance.
