Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lyrical and compelling, The Swan Princess draws the reader into the world of sixteenth-century Russia, a world unfamiliar to many readers, which becomes vividly real in the hands of this master storyteller. The characters of Nasan, Daniil, and the others leap off the page. Perhaps most intriguing is the portrayal of the clash between the two vibrant but alien cultures of the Russians and the Tatars--frequently at war, occasionally bound by an uneasy and watchful peace."  --Ann Swinfen, author of Voyage to Muscovy

From the Author

The power of the folk tale lies in its ability to capture and express the emotions of ages past and present. For much of history, many women lived constrained by the demands of domesticity, often bound to men not of their choosing under circumstances where they enjoyed little respect among people unconcerned with their needs, feelings, or desires. Is it any wonder that almost every culture includes some variation of the legend in which an animal wife escapes to her wild homeland (earth, sea, sky) after many trials or a selkie or fairy king lures a woman into a world promising enchantment and freedom from toil? This is the dilemma that Nasan faces in the third book of her series.
