Editorial Reviews

Hollywood Undead are about to drop a musical bomb. On their debut album (A&M/Octone), they've concocted an explosive cocktail of hip hop, rock and metal, forging an alternative style that's primed to blow the scene up. They craft incisive, sharp and sarcastic raps that slash the jugular of mainstream pop culture. They aren't your standard rap or rock crew. They're something new, dangerous, funny and alive. Deuce busts out the melodies. Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog and Charlie Scene lead the lyrical charge, while Funny Man drops rhymes, and Da Kurlzz hypes the fray. Donning individual masks, Hollywood Undead possess a dark aesthetic that's connected to their hometown's depravity. Tracks like "No. 5" dissect the frivolities of Hollywood with witty, catchy choruses. Album opener "Undead," sets the tone, firing off a big melody and buoyant beats. Meanwhile, "Los Angeles" examines the town's gritty edge. Rising to prominence via MySpace, these six masked marauders stood at number one on the site's music chart, leading to endless friend requests and plays. However, Hollywood Undead has got the gusto to be earth shattering far beyond cyberspace. They're already knocking at your door, and they're about to break it down.

I can't say enough about this album. When I first heard their single "Undead" on the radio about a month ago, I was hooked. I bought their album after checking out some of their other songs on YouTube, and now the album hasn't left my player since the day I bought it. It is the only thing I listen to right now.

I am not a fan of rap and this band definitely has rap splashed across their style, but it works and it works really well! Many of their lyrics are extremely vulgar and offensive to the point of being comical. Most of these lyrics are in songs about partying, drugs, and sex, so it fits well. Other songs provide powerful lyrics about their lives, relationships, and the messed up world around them. All-in-all, their words are powerful when they need to be and good careless fun when they don't need to be. Atop their well chosen lyrics are catchy beats and great tunes. I've been waking up with one of HU's songs stuck in my head almost every morning lately.

There is not a bad song on this album. I love them all! I have been introducing many people to this band and everyone has been impressed.

A little about each song (with a rating out of 5):

1) Undead (5/5) - My favorite on their album, clearly mixing the melody from Ozzy's "Crazy Train", but enhancing it with their own musical style

2) Sell Your Soul (4/5) - Good song, more rock based, favorite part is when it breaks away into "my heart beat stumbles, and my backbone crumbles..."

3) Everywhere I Go (5/5) - Great song. Definitely one of those songs based on partying, for example "when the cops show up, they're gonna get the finger, and I don't give a f**k, cause I'm the designated drinker!

All right, this album is not for everyone. Some of the lyrics are offensive, some are downright goofy and who else could get away with rhyming f****t with Bob Saget? However it is a fun album. I became a fan of Undead when Day of the Dead was released. I had not heard many tracks with Deuce and wanted to check out the early stuff. Since this is a first album, Deuce's vocals are not that strong, but they are not bad by any stretch. Undead, No.5, California and Black Dahlia are definitely the strongest tracks for me, California being the first HU song I ever heard, chancing upon it on Spotify last year. There are party songs and then there are angst ridden mopey tracks and that is it, this album is black and white with no inbetween. I would wager if you are a male from 13-21 this album is a dream come true for you. I myself am way too old to be listening to music like this but it doesn't change the fact that when no one's around I crank this sucker up and dance my butt off!

While I liked the songs for the most part when it was the 30 second play, I was taken aback by the context in the longer version. I know it is labelled explicit, so it is not the "dirty language", but rather the dismissive way the lyrics punch down. I don't expect music to be an opus to equality, but I have heard punk/rock that punches up. This is not punch up. Catchy music, off-putting lyrics.

I love Hollywood Undead and Deuce a lot. These tracks are so original and the mood often changes from up-beat party tracks (For ex. Everywhere I Go or No. 5), to serious emotional songs (like Black Dalhia or Sell Your Soul). This album is their first, so Deuce is still the lead singer (later replaced by Danny). Personally this is my favorite album, second being Day Of The Dead. If you like this album, I can say you will definitely like the 9 lives album, Deuce's first solo album which is really good.

I think that overall this CD sucks. The very first track "Undead" is the only song you really want to rock out to. I like listening to fast paced adrenalin pumping kick ass music when I"m working out and thought this would be a good album to listen to, but every other track wasn't nearly as good as the first one. I wasted my money.

I really loved this album. It has a nice mix of uplifting party tracks and moody songs that are more serious. While HU isn't the most original sounding band out there, it's sure is very enjoyable to listen to. Because the multiple rappers in this band's lineup, I tend to consider HU as being more of an alternative hip-hop group rather than a rapcore band. My favorite tracks on this album are: Undead, Bottle And A Gun, Sell Your Soul, and No Other Place. If you don't mind music that's vulgar and rude, I definitely recommend that you get this album. You'll love it. c:

White boys doing hard core rapping, I was amazed. I love HD though, they have a great sound and are really true to themselves. I love the ganster, partying vibe they have and it makes great "getting amped and ridiculous" music. It was definitely the soundtrack to my 21st birthday.

I have a relatively eclectic taste for music. Everything from Carol King to Emenm. This is a thumping CD that definitely lives up the warning of explicit but the songs have a story and the music a beat. If you have an affinity for RAP mixed with Flo Rida this would be a good CD for you.
