Editorial Reviews

Full title: Sweet Dreams: The Complete Decca Studios Masters [1960 - 1963] (2010 US 51-track digitally remastered 2-CD album set - In 1960, after five years of recording with 4 Star [distributed via Decca Records], Patsy Cline signed directly to Decca Records and producer Owen Bradley. Having been limited by 4 Star's insistence on dominating the copyrights of the songs she was recording. Owen & Patsy immediately looked more broadly for material, and their first three song session under the new contract instantly produced gold in 'I Fall To Pieces', her first Country #1 and her first charting recording in almost three years. The next year also produced her classic 'Crazy' and 'She's Got You', and Patsy Cline's star has shone brightly ever since. All she needed was the right material, and Owen Bradley and Decca provided it. Unfortunately, that illustrious combination was only to last until Patsy died in a plane crash at age 30 in March 1963. By then, she had recorded the 51 masters on this new collection, and these 51 tracks have become the crown jewels in this country Queen's recorded legacy. From standards to country classics, from Cole Porter and Irving Berlin to Willie Nelson and Hank Williams, the songs, Bradley's full-bodied productions, and Patsy's performances shine throughout. 'Sweet Dreams' is elaborated on by a series of remarkable period photos and insightful sleevenotes by Colin Escott

This collection is fantastic! I purchased the mp3-download version. Therefore, I didnt have to worry about the 'CD' case issue that many other customers have expressed concerns about. My only regret now is not having the insert booklet- which I've been told is very well done.

As a life-long Patsy Cline fan, this album is quite the treat! It is nice to finally have all of her Decca hits together. It was always a little frustrating to have to purchase several different Patsy albums just to get all of my favorites. It's nice to finally have everything together- at last. Better yet- the mp3 version has allowed me to put the music on my smartphone.

'Sweet Dreams' includes all of Patsy's Decca recordings- the music that catapulted her to the top of her career. Please note that recordings Patsy made between 1955 and late 1960 (under the '4-Star' label) are not included.

The sound quality is superb.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this compilation- whether you're a die-hard Patsy Cline fan, or are just now discovering her timeless tunes.

Absolutly stunning sound quality and new material I never heard before. Gives me goose bumps everytime I listen her songs on these CD's which always did on the other CD's I have but now with such in-depth clarity, you feel she's singing right beside you. Simply amazing!
I have been waiting for more remastered songs since I purchased the soundtrack to "Sweet Dreams" and listened to the few remastered material on that CD.

This 2 CD release includes everything Patsy Cline recorded and released on Decca Records during 1960-64. Some of the songs were first released on compilations in the years immediately after her tragic death in March 5, 1963, but all known Decca recordings are included here. There are probably outtakes and alternate recordings stored in the archives, but that is an entirely different matter.

For me the Cline recordings after her shift from 4-Star Records to Decca are genuinely interesting stuff, so this release contains everything that I find essential. Some 4-Star Records recordings may be solid enough, but they are mostly traditional country and do not have the charisma of her later recordings.

Along with Owen Bradley Cline broke out of the narrow country frameworks and recorded songs in several genres. Moreover, more versatile co-ordinated arrangements and contemporary songwriters were brought in.

Only two Decca albums were released during Cline's lifetime: "Showcase" and "Sentimentally Yours." Both albums are classics without any really weak numbers. Many of her best known songs come from these two albums.

From the "Showcase", released in 1961, come "I Fall to Pieces," "Wayward Wind", "Crazy" and "Seven Lonely Days". "Sentimentally Yours" from 1962 is a superb album with songs like "She's Got You," "You Belong to Me," "Lonely Street," "Your Cheating Heart" and "That's My Desire."

Various singles and surviving numbers were released in 1963-1964 on the albums "A Portrait" (1963), "The Patsy Cline Story" (1963) and "That's How Heartache Begins" (1964).

The music is great, the "packaging" problems noted by others are actually a problem with the discs. They are extra thick and therefore extra heavy. Not only does this make them hard to pry out of the package, but in my old Sony changer they each fell off the little suction cup that they rotate on while playing and I had to take the deck apart (twice, I'm a slow learner) to retrieve them. My advice to changer owners is to copy the discs onto normal weight CDs before you play them so you can avoid the hassle I went through.

This new double cd by Patsy Cline is a real treat. It contains all the studio masters that the country-pop diva recorded for Decca between 1960 and 1963, the year of her tragic, untimely death.

The sound is lovingly remastered and the music is never short of marvellous, with songs gently propelled by crisp, shuffling rhythms and dappled by perfectly poised strings and steel guitars. The vocal performances are obviously stunning, Patsy's voice wringing every nuance from these pristine lyrics about melancholy love. The set is also completed by a lavish booklet, filled with detailed liner notes and beautiful black and white photos.

So why are we giving "Sweet Dreams" only four stars?

That is easily explained: when we opened our limited edition digipack we discovered that it was IMPOSSIBLE to remove the cds from their trays. You know how it works: you press lightly on the tray center and the cd usually slips out. Nothing of the sort happened this time: we had to press and press until both trays CRACKED right in the middle and we were finally able to "free" the discs, which we duly lodged in a spare jewel case.

We were then luckly enough to be able to remove the tray debris without damaging the cd cover on which they had been glued. After a good hour's work, we gloriously managed to start our Patsy Cline listening session.

Therefore beware: this cd is a musical treasure, but it also contains a devilish tray device that will have you destroy the original package in order to access the music.

There was probably a better tray model to choose for this deluxe edition. Apparently, no one at Geffen thought about it.
