The characters are likable and understandable, the plot more comfortable than exciting. Among the everyday events such as picnics, school concerts, and a child's birthday party, heroine Nicky works through two relationships, one with her long-distance husband Shane, who lives in Los Angeles while she lives in London, and the other with Daniel, a man who slowly takes Shane's place in her heart. But deeper than either, Nicky realizes how stodgy her life has become. What she loses in love, she gains in herself. And the last line is perfect.
Unlike stories where good writing carries a weak plot or shallow characters, here the nicely drawn characters and touching plot sometimes carry the writing. The wordsmithing could use some work, with lots of "telling" rather than "showing." It gets between the reader and the story. That said, Nicky's search will stay with me longer than many other characters' quests. And that last, perfect sentence left this reader satisfied.
