I bought this book after viewing Sam Talbot demonstrating two recipes from this book on the Nate Berkus Show. The tagline was "Meals under $10" . I tried both recipes,(Shirataki Noodles with Cashews and Chiles and, Grilled Chicken Thighs with Endive and Apple Saute) both were healthy and DELICIOUS). When I received the book I realized that it was directed towards diabetics. Although I am not a diabetic I do worry about my weight, and with the staggering statistics of Americans developing diabetes I welcomed having healthier options to incorporate into my everyday meals. These recipes include a good amount of protein (which pleases my bodybuilder husband) and an incredible amount of fiber and antioxidants. One example of this is the recipe for Coconut Acai Granola Crumble. It has goji berries, golden berries, mulberries, cacao nibs, acai powder, tons of nuts, and oats. I tasted each item separately and wasn't that enthused, but I made the granola and it turned out delicious. I urge anyone who has not heard of these ingredients to do some reading about them, and you will see for yourself how remarkably healthful this is. I am still trying more recipes and have not yet been disappointed. The only thing I have an issue with, and I know I'm nit picking is this: Although nutritional information is included it is never expressly stated how many servings there are in any recipe. Many you can surmise because of the way you are directed to portion it out. But some you can not, the granola for example. Having said that, the book is beautifully photographed, has delicious recipes that are healthy. Whether you are diabetic or not this book is good for you.

After being diagnosed with gestational diabetes and being concerned about not slipping into type 2 diabetes, post pregnancy, I dramatically changed my diet. Was so excited to see Sam's cookbook, recipes looked really interesting. I've tried about 5 of the dishes, loved 3 of them, HATED 2 of them. The egg dishes are a miss (had to throw away the blueberries with egg whites, yuck! and the egg and dried cherry frittata sent my glucose level way up.) Loved the shiritaki noodle dishes and the cod dish. Also, I agree that its annoying that they don't give a serving breakdown. And some recipes include ingredients but then don't say in the recipe where they go. Did this guy not have an editor or a proofreader?? Just seems like it was written by a chef who's not very detailed. Fortunately, I'm a pretty avid home cook who can figure it out but good luck to first time cooks. I will keep trying the recipes but just disappointed that they didn't take more care in the details.

This book is not just a cookbook but also a memoir of his daily life as a type 1 diabetic. My wife was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic at 33 and she was devastated. She, like most people, hold a negative connotation of diabetics, she did not know that type 1 can be triggered by an autoimmune response in the body. The Sweat Life, gives you a great starting point for recipes and give you the knowledge to build upon them. He also addresses daily life, his views on a pump vs self injections, he even talks about drinking. I recommend this book to everyone, diabetic or not.

Sam Talbot's recipes are on the low-carb side and appealing. The nutrition information for each recipe, however, does not include serving sizes. That is a serious short-coming for a cookbook aimed at people with diabetes.
Despite that omission the book would be a good gift for a newly diagnosed person with diabetes who enjoys cooking, lives near high-end groceries, and likes trying new ingredients. Talbot's approach to life, health, and eating is inspiring.

What I really love about this cookbook is that its fun to read. Cookbooks can be so dry and boring... But Sam has a way with words that will make you giggle as you browse. The pictures are beautiful, and descriptions could be read as a book alone. He even tosses in helpful advice from experience, such as daily care suggestions and valuable travel tips.

He uses cutting edge ingredients that some of us would never figure out how to use on our own (aka gogi berries, acai powder, almond milk, etc.). But he makes it easy and approachable. For diabetics, this cookbook is golden. Tasty, interesting, easy, and everything is good for us! Some of the portion sizes are missing, but a quick calculation does the trick. For non-diabetics, the food is simply delicious, healthy, and fun.

Congratuations, Sam,The Sweet Life: Diabetes without Boundaries for this achievement. You've really opened up my world, and made me a healthier diabetic to boot!
