Product Description

Sweet orange peel is used in many different styles of beer. Most notably in Belgian Wit's, but many American wheat's are using sweet orange peel as well. You get a flavor that is much like Grand Mariner or Cointreau. Use 1/2 - 1 ounce in a 5 gallon batch of beer. Add the peels with 15 minutes left of the boil.

I have been brewing Blue Moon for years. I like this orange peel the best. It consists of very fine granules. What you typically get from your home brew store is sold in one ounces packets and the peel is very course. ***Update, Reordered the product and this time the peel was not chopped as fine. It was closer in to what you typically get from your local store in 1 ounce packages, but the pieces were chopped a little smaller. I'll update again in the future when I use the reordered product with thoughts of performance.***

I think my blue moon turns out best when using this product because the peel is very fine exposing more surface area. I use 2 ounces of this product per five gallons of finished beer. I put it in the wort with five minutes remaining in the boil.

I used this orange peel along with some other dried herbs and things in bath teabags. Every year for Christmas I take simple muslin bags and stuff them with a combination of products to make herbal bath soaking teabags. I used this orange peel along with things like oats, spearmint leaves, dry milk, lavender flowers, etc. This orange peel was so fragrant I actually lost a couple of teabags to my dogs, who love oranges and who stole the finished products and ate the orange peel out of them, lol. The teabags are always a family favorite gift, but this year the citrus ones using orange and lemon peel were a huge hit. I'll definitely be back at Christmas time to buy more.

I have used this for four beer brewings. The first time I used the recommended amount. Nothing. The next time I used a quarter cup for a two gallon batch. Nothing. The next time I used 1/3 of a cup. Nothing. This last time I used 1/2 a cup and I just noticed the tiniest, slightest hint of orange in my beer. I am going to try a full cup for the next brewing and that is probably the last time I'll try this if it doesn't have an orange taste. Blue Moon it certainly isn't.

Been working on finding decent orange flavor from peel sources. So far the best has been from fresh sources, such as using a peeler to thinly shave slices from valencia or cara cara oranges. With either of those you could get an immediate sense of citrus and sweet. This stuff? Might work for beer, but I'd expect better sweetness from BBQ wood chips or sawdust. I'll be tossing mine.

If you still order some - and many might - place a teaspoon in your mouth and literally let it expand and gently chew it. Mine had none of the flavor I hoped for. Probably too acidic for garden mulch. Pity.
