You have no time for drama and pain?
Forgive my total killing of the lines by W.H Davies.:) This is the first thing that came to my mind when I read Sweet Revenge by Olivier Lafont. A love story full of drama, pain, passion and misunderstanding. Palpable passion in every page Eve and Guy meet.
Eve is a painter who has made a series of painting of a man- Nineteen Mysteries. And the story is about the twentieth painting! :D. About a man who had once broken her heart. A man who is out to seek revenge for an act that she is accused of. However, in all the miseries one-thing does stand out – that she still loves him. The only problem being his love for revenge overtook his love for her. Will they ever go beyond their past?
A Tinge of Erotica?
That will be the first question that would come to your mind when you first see the cover of the book. Here the adage “don’t go by the cover of a book” will really apply. It’s passionate no doubt about that- but the romance has all the beauties clinging to it from time immemorial. Pain, heartbreak, those tiny butterflies in your tummy and above all - that lump in your throat when you close the book. If this is not pure romance, then what is?
The French Connection …
Once I read long back.. when a hero says “I love you” in the end you get a happy ending but when he says “Je vous aime” those tiny butterflies in your tummy go wild. Guy must have been created keeping that in mind, besides the author's French roots. He comes across as a suave, passionate yet brooding Frenchman. In all his actions, his redeeming and endearing factor is his love for his “Petite maman” and his chivalrous nature.
“He knelt by Eve, all his life focused in that beautiful face, and the words that spilled from his lips were, “Eve… Eve, mon amour.” Eve… Eve, my love. Words that damned him.”
It is evident from the beginning that Eve and Guy are in love but the misunderstanding keeping them apart is equally appalling. Both seem right yet both are wrong. The villainy played by Steve Garrick is very subtle yet profound. Deep gnashes in a relationship are hard to mend.
I had always thought I had matured as a reader from Mills and Boon to (ok this is a blatant lie. I still love reading them) to Nicholas Spark kind of romance but Mr. Lafont took me back to my college days when love and heartbreaks were pure and élan vital for growing up. There are moments in this novel when you want to leap ahead to the last page, not out of boredom but because you want to know a HOW if not a WILL. We know in a romance of this genre that there will be a happy conclusion but the road taken to reach the goal has to live up to those expectations. In this instance, the journey, along with Guy and Eve is worth every page turn.
Check out my reason for the star rating here :
The story is of a typical misunderstanding between lovers but adding to it is dishonesty and selfish people who want to ensure the lovers stay apart. In turn the “she did it, no he did it” ensures both Guy and Eve keep trying to equal the score or try and seek revenge. The story is fast paced, not a dull moment and the twists and turns kept me engrossed. I read the book in two sittings but it was a hard to put down book.
The author has taken a romance and woven a tale with twists and turns making it into a page turner. The one thing that I was not happy with was the cover, it is a bit misleading. The picture makes the reader think that it is a steamy, erotic read but the book is far from it. It is hot inside the covers, no doubt but the kind a reader enjoys and won’t hesitate sharing with friends. A very tasteful read, I am recommending it to my mom. She will enjoy it, such is the layered story.
The characters are all well developed and endearing. I especially loved reading about Petite Maman – guy’s Grandmother who evoked so much love and faith. Another thing I enjoyed was that the thoughts of both the protagonists were shared by the author and he has done full justice to both of their emotions and thoughts.
“No photograph had ever captured him that well, that humanly. In this man were qualities and strengths anyone would die to have.”
The path of true love is never easy and here the deceit, confusion and ego, all have their share in keeping the lovers apart. Even a scheming relative adds to the plot. The fast paced story with delightful passages filled with love and its myriad feelings and thoughts had me smiling and reading much to the annoyance of my son. He never likes it when he can’t find pictures in what I read – poor kid, doesn’t know what he is missing! ;)
An effortlessly handsome, well etched hero who made me swoon and drool. Strong, self made and the quintessential romance hero; Oliver has written Guy perfectly.
Eve, the heroine is smart, sweet, honest and sexy as sin. She embodies femininity and style, a gentle lady with an artist’s soul as the reader will discover.
“She was a vision in red satin, something out of fashion legend, with the black sash cinched around the waist he had caresses to madness days before.”
Sentences that speak of adoration, rapture and longing to be in each other’s arms; feeling and sharing love. Language that beautifies the emotions and feeling make this a seductive, sensuous and amorous read. I just loved the book and will be reading it again – a very rare thing for me since I can count the handful of books I have re-read! A sublime read for the lovers of romance and love.
All I can say is - another romance please, Oliver. Hope you are already writing one!
(I got a copy of the book from the author; the review is my own.)
Many male authors have recently begun writing for the romance genre in India; though this is the first time I am reading a book by one. Okay, that’s not counting the books of Sandilyan, a Tamil Historical Romance author who’s simply amazing. I adore his works and have read many of his 45+ novels.
I opened Sweet Revenge and was hooked from Page One. As a story goes, it’s simple and uncomplicated. The language is good and the book portrays the delicious romance between Guy and Eve. There are a few French words and phrases thrown in considering that the author originates from France. But the meanings have been interwoven without taking away from the story.
Spoiler warning from here on…
I loved the journey of the hero from poverty to super-rich. I truly believe that’s how a hero should be. And is he handsome!!!! Completely drool-worthy!
The descriptions of Eve’s artwork were really good. I liked her character that goes on with her life despite her heart break.
The reason the two of them break up seven years before is well presented and neatly portrayed. And am I glad that Guy’s Sweet Revenge fell apart!
The love scenes sizzle and make for a delicious read.
One thing that bothered me though: there were at least two points where I got confused with the flash back as I couldn’t understand where it was taking me. I had to go back and read it again to understand. This could have been improved upon.
Except for this, the book is a lovely romance that is a must read for romance lovers.
