Why Choose SweetLeaf?
SweetLeaf creates the highest quality products using stevia leaf to make choosing a healthy lifestyle the easy choice.
-
Jim May "The Father Of Stevia" and founder of SweetLeaf and Wisdom Natural Brands
Jim knew there had to be a better option than sugar, and he found it with Stevia. The Stevia plant’s natural sweetness had the potential to naturally replace sugar without the calories, glycemic response, and adverse health effects. He began to import healthful herbal teas from the Amazon rainforest, including Stevia, and created great tasting sugar alternatives.

Have you made the switch from sugar to stevia?
If you aren’t exactly sure what stevia is, let us give you a brief overview. Stevia is a plant. It was discovered in Paraguay about 1,500 years ago. After its discovery, the native Guarani people used the leaves for medicinal benefits. Interestingly, they also used it to sweeten their famous herbal yerba maté tea.
SweetLeaf Stevia has zero calories, zero carbs, and is non glycemic.

Doesn't stevia have a bad aftertaste?
Not all stevia is created equal. The bitter aftertaste that can be experienced from other products may have arisen from artificial ingredients or chemicals used in processing. SweetLeaf Stevia has no bitterness or aftertaste.
Are SweetLeaf products appropriate for people with diabetes?
Yes, SweetLeaf Stevia products, with their non-glycemic response, are appropriate for people with diabetes. We advise anyone with medical questions or specific health conditions to check with their physician for medical recommendations.

Our Sweet Story
Wisdom Natural Brands, the parent company of SweetLeaf, was founded by James A. May after meeting the Guarani people and seeing the benefits of plants in their culture. In 1982, James established Wisdom Natural Brands, which was the first company to bring stevia to consumers in the United States. This earned him the name “The Father of Stevia.” From there, his company launched SweetLeaf to produce the highest quality stevia products on the market today.
As a company, there are several things that we’re proud to say make SweetLeaf unique:
- SweetLeaf is a family owned company. In fact, Mr. May’s son, Michael, has now taken the reins and is keeping his father’s legacy alive. You can expect that family-owned feel anytime you interact with our company.
- SweetLeaf is focused on sustainability, traceability, and transparency. We support the economy of organic farmers all over the globe by sourcing our ingredients from small family-owned farms. We also work directly with agricultural scientists to constantly improve organic farming techniques so both our company and the farmers can thrive. SweetLeaf is also passionate about improving the living conditions of these organic farmers and their employees, providing them access to potable water, education for their children, and safe housing.
- SweetLeaf is made with quality stevia for a better tasting product. We use the highest quality stevia available in all of our products in order to ensure that you, our customers, have a superior stevia experience every time.
- SweetLeaf cares about our customers' health. Our longstanding relationship with The American Heart Association puts the health of our customers at the forefront of our business. We are proud to support The American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good movement.

All other ‘natural’ zero calorie or no sugar sweeteners like xylitol, sorbitol or erythritol and any of the sweeteners names ending ‘tol’ are not really natural because they’ve been extremely chemically processed and there have been reputable clinical studies of these zero calorie sweeteners causing health problems, so I ended up getting stevia for baking instead. To me, 2 teaspoons of this equals to a cup of sugar. Some may say less or more but that’s my personal taste. The only thing is, you can’t use it in recipes that require a sweetener that will crystallize and caramelize so it will add to the texture of the recipe. You’ll have to add something else for that. This powdered Stevia basically doesn’t crystallize or harden to give the right consistency for baking things like candy or fudge. For example, peanut butter or other cookies will not have the same texture or crunchiness. Great for muffins.
4 oz (biggest size available, I think)
Uses fiber instead of chem-lab fake sugars as a pouring agent.
Includes both shaker and spoonable options in the lid.
Convenient shaker size.
Label generally easy to read.
Cons:
Not as sweet as sugar.
Does have a slight bitter after-taste.
I have to mix this with the cheap stuff (based on Erythritol or Dextrose instead of fiber) and a little sugar to get a good sweetness and flavor.
Wrapper was difficult to get into properly.
Suggestion to manufacturer:
Make a version of this (would need to be a larger size) that includes a mixture of Stevia, Inulin, Erythritol (but not much of this, because it's not digestible), and sugar (a small amount is all that's needed) and sell it at a mid-range price instead of the higher price we're all paying for SweetLeaf Stevia these days. Might as well. That's what I'm having to do here at home to make it taste right anyway.
Also, include a 1/8 tsp. measure (small rounded measuring-spoon shape, not "teaspoon" shape), and sell these two items as a set in a box (at this price, the box could be made from bamboo or hemp fibers instead of wood fibers).
An upgrade with a fancy shaker and spoon set, in a fancy box, as an all-sustainable-materials gift-set, maybe with some upscale teabags, would also be a fun alternative. A companion to this would be, say, a 12 oz or 24 oz. refill container made of biodegradable and recyclable plastic (so everyone would have options regarding whether to recycle or not). Including an address to ship the used plastic to would benefit the environment as well as USPS (which would be part of helping to keep them funded). You could offer coupons to customers who used USPS to ship the used plastic containers to the facility at the address. You could also offer to plant 1 tree for each of those containers shipped there (regardless of the carrier). The facility could break down the plastic and make plastic "bricks" and other materials that could be used as part of manufacturing temporary homes for homeless people, planters for gardening, bubble-wrap, 3D printed honey-comb-lattice-structure "styrofoam," cheap shelving units, and other useful ways of using that type of plastic. You could partner with other companies to get them to do similar things to the things I'm suggesting here.
How I use it most often:
I make my own soymilk at home, then heat that (at half the volume I'll want total), mix in some Baking Cocoa and vanilla, then I add a few cubes of ice, and then the above mixture of sweeteners, to make chilled chocolate soymilk. I use the above sweetener mixture in other recipes as well, but this is how I use it most often.
I'll never purchase the SweetLeaf brand again in any form. They have multiple products so it can get pretty confusing to compare prices. I'll admit--I made a mistake. I thought this product was simply the non-organic version of: "Sweetleaf Organic Stevia Leaf Extract" which is PURE stevia powder. It's not.
This product is MOSTLY inulin--a polysaccharide, usually derived from chicory root, which has been touted in recent years as a "pre-biotic," something that feeds the good bacteria in the intestinal tract. Anyone who has heard of FODMAPS knows that is a bunch of bs. FODMAPS stands for: fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. These are short chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and are prone to absorb water and ferment in the colon. Yep, you read that right--FERMENT. They are thought to be the main cause of irritable bowel syndrome. Even if you don't have this issue, you're going to pass a lot more gas from consuming this as all of your gut bacteria have a BIG party.
How do I know this is mostly inulin? First of all, it's the first ingredient on the list. Second, the organic SweetLeaf (pure stevia) product I mentioned above says that the equivalent sweetness to 1 teaspoon of sugar is 1/200 of a teaspoon of that product. On the bottle of THIS product, it states the equivalent sweetness is 1/8 tsp. If you do the simple math, that means there is 25 times more stevia in the pure stevia. Not 25% more. 25 TIMES more. Does that mean that there is a 24:1 proportion of inulin to stevia? Maybe. I'm not a mathematician but I'm sure that means there is not much stevia in this product at all. And that's just by the math on the bottle. Keep reading and you'll see that there's no way that 1/8 teaspoon of this product is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of table sugar (at least by MY taste buds).
I'll admit to having a high sweetness acuity. I was raised on sweet tea and Kool-Aid. That's why I moved to other sweeteners as an adult because that's way too much sugar. But when I make a large mug of green tea (about 24 oz) I still only have to put a pinch of pure stevia in my mug or two to three splenda packets (which is equivalent to 4-6 teaspoons of sugar--and extremely sweet, even to me
Last night, I started out with a 1/4 teaspoon of this product, thinking I'd probably have to add another 1/4 tsp. Eventually, I had put in a full teaspoon of this stuff and my tea still wasn't sweet to my taste. Supposedly that was the equivalent of 8 teaspoons of sugar. Half that would have been enough sugar. And I got bloated and nauseated for my troubles--and belched and passed wind all evening. Thanks, SweetLeaf. Never again will I be duped into buying one of your products.
Inulin has NO PLACE in this product or any other.
