Editorial Reviews
Multi-platinum, Grammy-Award nominated artist Ariana Grande to release highly-anticipated album, 'Sweetener,' via Republic Records on 8/17. Album includes smash hit, 'no tears left to cry,' which closed out the US Top 40 radio panel week-of impact and made Ariana the first artist to kick-off four album campaigns with a Top 10 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The pre-order will launch with new track 'the light is coming (feat. Nicki Minaj).' Ariana Grande will support the album with numerous media appearances.

I gave this 4/5 stars because I did not fully like this vinyl pressing and master. The best part of this master is that it is obviously not brickwalled (hyper compressed and clipped audio) by the loudness wars that begun after c. 1995. I can hear new details that were drowned out by the loudness in the digital masters (CD, Tidal MQA, Amazon Ultra HD, MP3s, etc). There's tiny details that come to life with this mix, and I highly appreciate them.
I did not like that this pressing had many clicks, pops, and tearing hisses especially in 'i' and 's' sounds/pronunciations. It was worse on side 1 and 2 (first vinyl). The second vinyl was much quieter. The audio in this mix seems to be mastered in a sub-par manner which deafens frequencies above 16-18 KHz. I possibly attribute this to being a foreign UK pressing by Polydor Records, or an inadequate RIAA equalization curve applied (some alternative variant?). I have seen this issue in previous Vinyl records from the UK like Adele's 25. USA pressed Vinyl records seem to have the best mastering and pressing technique nowdays. I picked up Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway in Gold Vinyl from Urban Outfitters and it has the best pressing I've heard to date, all frequencies are resonant up to 30KHz as seen in a frequency spectrometer. I purchased thank u, next here on Vinyl in the black album format (not from Target). I now fear this Vinyl will have these similar mastering issues, so I'll have to get the Target (hopefully USA Pressing) version just to compare. This Vinyl was available from Urban Outfitters but I'm not sure where that version was pressed and mastered.
On the music, it is 10/10. Many have bashed Pharrell's involvement in this album, but he did a great job. The vocals and sound elements are as expected from Ariana, nothing to complain on that. I only rate this 4/5 due to the issues mentioned above.
Setup:
- U Turn Orbit Special (Maple Plinth with Acrylic Turntable) (With Built-in Preamp)
- Ortofon 2M Bronze (Nude Fine Line Stylus)
- Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD USB Audio Interface

At first fans wrote her off as a Mariah Carey clone/imitator, but Ariana grew into a unique artist with her second album "My Everything". Slight vocal similarities aside Ariana is possibly the only vocalist post Christina Aguilera with similarities to Carey that has built a career that spans multiple albums and hit records. Ariana is also like Christina in that she makes a habit of changing her style with successive albums. Grande doesn't stay put for long. She's evolving with each album.
All of her albums previous to this one, plus her post work, relied on catchy hooks and Grande's soaring vocals, which she has used to her advantage. In the sad shape that pop music is in right now, Grande's voice brings something to the table. Grande's music may not always match the caliber and depth of Carey's earliest hits, but she's a very skilled vocalist like her idol.
But what good is having a good voice while singing mediocre material? And that's what the album mostly consists of. Just like Carey did on "Music Box", Ariana makes the decision to downplay her vocal talents and croon over the beat...beats with an absence of hooks. This album is all flash without substance. Tracks like "Pete Davidson" feature subject matter that's silly. The title track is a cool trap-like song even though the idea is better than the actual execution of the song.
It just seems like Ariana was going through the motions on this release. There are some highlights here, as with any Ariana album. Her vocals, when she does use them, are in fine form on the pretty ballad "breathin" and the cool "get well soon". I was surprised when they made the former a single because it's not one of the more commercial tracks on this release, but it is one of her best ballads.
There are some good cuts on the album, but those tracks never live up to the material on previous albums. The soaring vocals that we all love are downplayed, There is a lack of hooks and Ariana's poor enunciation is still a detriment. The best thing you can say about this action is she tried something new. Cuts like "God is a Woman" are highlights, but this album leaves something to be desired and in the end it just doesn't play as well as the album that preceded and succeeded it. 3 1/2 stars.
