This is a story that involves Adam and Lana.
Adam is running the local bar where all the locals gather and he hears the local stories, the gossip. Adam had a problem with drinking a while back and at times, it can be hard to run the bar, especially when he is stressed but he does it.
In comes Lana. Lana left Madison about 20 years ago to escape the death and sex abuse that rocked this small town. When she hears the murders and sex abuse are again rocking the small town she decides she needs to head back to fight her demons.
There she meets Adam and finds that Adam is fighting demons of his own, which one is being a recovering alcoholic. Other demons they are fighting is being victims of sexual abuse. The story line can be heavy at times. Adam and Lana work together to put the demons in their past at rest and work together to find out who is committing the current murders away.
The story line really was entertaining and at times had me very sad for the characters. There were twists and turns I didn’t see coming but I liked that. I can’t wait for book 3 to come out.
I highly recommend that you read book 1 in the series-“Deeper Than Need” which starts this story and better explains things.
I really recommend this story. It is very entertaining even if you are coming into the story as a first time reader. The interaction between Adam and Lana was hot; their scenes in the book literally leaped off the page. Kudos to Ms. Walker for writing such a sensitive topic and making it work without being overly “vulgar”.
My Rating: 5 stars *****
Engaging is the right word for this series. We get to know the townsfolk, and all of their deep, dark, truly hideous secrets. We care about the victims, and want retribution against the perpetrators. In Sweeter Than Sin, we watch one major player come back on the scene, while the man who has loved her for 20 years struggles with the reasons behind her disappearance, and her motives for returning to the scene of the crime.
I've said it before, no one writes tortured males as well as Ms. Walker. Adam's head is not a fun place to be. He's a recovering alcoholic, 15 years sober, but you get the impression that each day, each hour, each minute of those 15 years has been Adam actively wrestling his addiction, and only winning through sheer will. He has made no peace with the demons that drove him to alcohol in the first place. When the biggest demon ends up in Adam's bar, he is left reeling.
Lana has battled addictions of her own, establishing a disciplined existence of trying to atone for her sins committed on the night she disappeared. She comes back to Madison when she learns of the goings on detailed in the previous books, determined to get answers, and put a stop to the perverted activities going on in the town. Activities she thought had ended when she left town some 20 years ago.
In my opinion, Sweeter Than Sin is best categorized as a suspense novel with strong romantic elements. The balance between the two tips slightly to the suspense side, but my romance loving heart was completely satisfied, as well. Adam and Lana deserve to be happy, and they had off the charts chemistry.
The subject matter in this series is dark. Ms. Walker doesn't try to sugar coat the subject, but there is nothing gratuitous or graphic, either. Beyond the pedophilia ring, there is murder, small town intrigue, malicious intent and unrelenting retribution. There is a lot going on, but the plot is easy to follow, as one layer peels back to reveal a deeper motivation. The writing is stellar. Highly recommend, although I would urge you to at least read Deeper Than Need before reading Sweeter Than Sin.
Lana Rossi left town twenty years ago at the age of seventeen amidst dire circumstances. She thought she was doing the right thing by leaving but unbeknownst to her she was betrayed. She’s been hiding ever since and life has not been easy for her with the knowledge of what went on in Madison and gaps in her memory of the fateful night and days after that sent her running. Spiraling out of control she succumbed to drug abuse and escapism sex until someone reached out a helping hand. Clean and with the assistance of the internet she’s monitored events in the place that she once called home. When the shocking evils that transpired in Madison finally surface in the media she realizes that it didn’t stop like she thought it had so she knows that it’s time to go home and help shut things down. She tried to help a friend and it cost her so much. Everyone back home wondered if she was alive or dead.
Adam Brascum has lived with the disappearance of his friend Lana for years assuming her dead. She was the one that he secretly loved but didn’t feel that he was good enough for. He has never forgotten the night that she called him for help and then called back and asked him to keep quiet about hearing from her. He’s always regretted not being able to help her and took to drinking to forget until he made a promise upon the death of his parents to sober up. Staying sober to honor his parents has not been easy to do running the bar that they left him, a meeting place where people talk about the horrors in his town. Horrors that would drive any sane person to drink.
There are very few people in Madison that would recognized the woman Lana is today, she’s dyed her red tresses to brunette and wears glasses that she doesn’t need. She dresses to not attract attention but the eyes are the windows to the soul and those that truly knew her, those that have mourned her disappearance have never forgotten her eyes. Adam would know her anywhere and he is the first person that knows her that she sees in town, Adam, the one that she had a crush on when she was young. Their meeting is electric, shock, anger, and wanting flowed through Adam’s veins. He couldn’t help her then but he’ll help her now. He wants answers that she isn’t able to give and he still wants her.
This story is filled with so much darkness and suspense. You have a town where fathers raped their sons and called it a club, a practice passed on to the next generation, involving people with the power to keep things secret. It’s absolute horror. Yet there are those who tried to stop the depravity but even they didn’t know how deep the sickness within their town was until now. There were so many impacted by the town’s sickness before it was even public knowledge besides the boys who were the victims. This story focuses on two such individuals and within the darkness of the lives that they were dealt they manage to find each other, a place where they both fit.
Adam and Lana are two characters that were given much emotional depth. Their torments were tangible. They both exhibited strength in rising from their addictions. I liked how their relationship progressed, how Adam was there for Lana this time and how she didn’t run when her first instinct was to do so. Their chemistry was evident. Their HEA is a happy for now which suits this pair for the road they need to travel is not yet done but for them there is now light shining through the darkness and they are no longer traveling their lives alone. I definitely enjoyed their story.
We are given multiple points of view, not just of the main protagonists but others in the town. There are so many people to keep track of that add to the storyline and there were twists that I did not see coming and an interesting surprise. I also want to buy the one seeking vengeance against the club members a drink. This dark suspense series has captured my attention and I am invested in the outcome of so many of these characters. I look forward to seeing how it all ends.
