Editorial Reviews

Review

RT Book Review: "Talley uses her skill to create authentic characters whose emotions and activities ring true. It's not hard to picture Shelby acting impulsively with a man after being thrown over by another, just like it's not hard to see John wanting to be close to his child after losing his wife."

2015 RITA nominee for Best Long Contemporary Romance book

About the Author

Liz Talley writes romance because falling in love over and over again through the pages of a book is the best feeling in the world (and cheaper than therapy). A 2009 Golden Heart finalist in Regency romance and a 2015 RITA finalist in contemporary romance, she's found her niche writing sassy contemporaries with down-home warmth and Southern charm. She lives in North Louisiana surrounded by a loving family, a herd of animals, and towering loads of laundry.

I never expected one of the most uplifting stories of loss, healing, longing, faith and romance to start with a quickie in a bar bathroom. Two grief-stricken people make one of the worst mistakes possible, a human mistake, but one these two extremely likable people must deal with as it changes their lives forever. Talley's ability to weave Southern culture, faith and a sexy romance makes this book a true page turner and keeper. John Beauchamp is one of the most decent, tortured heroes in recent memory. Shelby Mackey, a self-described Playboy bunny type who knows she needs to change the trajectory of her life, is just as decent and likable a heroine. I admired John's pastor dad who is a real person (not a religious stereotype), appreciated Talley's sense of humor and wanted to join the Beauchamp family. Guess I will just have to make do with reading the next book in this new series.

Crazy about this story from the Bayou Bridge series. I love the way it starts with Shelby in the bathroom. When she decided to return to Bayou Bridge she does so with determination to change her world. I love a strong heroine, but I also love a strong, sexy, sweet male. No two dimensional characters here, Talley makes them believable with road blocks and enough passion for each other to make the reader root for the couple to the last page. I particularly like the symbolism she threads through all her books, and in this one, it ties in with how the characters deal with grief and loss. Good read.

The Sweetest September
Liz Talley
Harlequin SuperRomance, Aug 5 2014, $6.75
ISBN: 9780373608621

Shelby Mackey took The Road To Bayou Bridge to see her boyfriend Darby Dufrene who came home for a visit after years away in the Navy. Instead of leaving with Darby, they learn to his shock and her chagrin he remains married to Renny Latioles who he wed before enlisting. Upset to find Darby and Renny back together, Shelby has a one night stand with a stranger, widower John Beauchamp, before fleeing from the Bayou while her sack companion wallows in guilt and remorse for betraying his late wife Rebecca.

Three months after their only evening together, Shelby, knowing she is doing the right thing, once again takes The Road To Bayou Bridge to inform John she is carrying his baby; though she believes with 100 percent certainty he will decline participating in raising their child. Instead he stuns her when John insists he will help raise their infant. Even more astonishing to Shelby, his family (especially his preacher father) does not condemn her but also wants the child to know intimately his or her paternal roots.

The strong cast with their emotional poignant reactions especially towards the pregnancy makes this Home In Magnolia Bend entry a marvelous believable contemporary. Filled with real people’s humor and angst, fans will appreciate this tale while wondering about the reaction of the kid when she is old enough to learn her conception occurred in a Bayou Bengals bar bathroom.

A very sweet book of about a couple that meets in a pub drunk one night and everything shatters around them after that one night. Kind of predictable but I'm ok with that. A very easy and quick read. Does have some angst about it though so I was never bored once while reading.

Wonderful read. Great emotion, and I love the voice. I understood why the characters behaved as they did, and enjoyed watching the couple find their HEA. My first Talley book, but it won't be my last.

The Sweetest September follows the story of Shelby Mackey and John Beauchamp and what one wild night can lead to. Any book that starts with "SHELBY MACKEY HAD experienced a lot of bad sex in her lifetime, but she’d never made a man cry." has my attention. From page one you will love Shelby and laugh with her and root for her to finally find true love with John, a tortured widow who is trying to discover how to love again. It is equal parts steamy and sweet, complete with an array of small town characters who are not all thrilled about their Magnolia Bend bachelor falling for some Seattle "hussy". The Sweetest September is great for those of you looking for a well-written, endearing romance with a little small town charm and a lot of Shelby sass! Bring on book 2!

I loved this book. Shelby made mistakes in her past and had heartache, but she stayed strong. She never played the victim, and I loved that about her. John was grieving the death of his wife and just going through the motions. He numbed his pain with constant work in the fields. He needed a reason to really live again, and Shelby gave that to him. This story was a little gritty at times and sweet at others. The people felt real to me, and I could see the story unfold in my head. I have not read the book where Shelby was introduced, but now I feel like I should because I want to know what happened to bring Shelby to this point in her life. Liz Talley is becoming one of my new favorite authors.

I have read every book by Liz Talley and with each book I think she coudl not possibly top the one I just read and everytime I am wrong. The Sweetest September was no exception. I was immediately drawn into the characters and by the end of the book I felt like I had lived in Magnolia Bend all of my life. Liz takes tragedy and grief and gracefully writes about how a family deals with it, each in their own way and own time. I just wish I didn't have to wait for the next book to come out.
