This book features "basic vocabulary, short sentences, [and] simple stories." The Sweetest Spring contains six very short rhyming stories, each with a focus on something to do with spring and featuring a different princess. Snow White and the dwarfs do spring cleaning. Ariel and her sisters put on a spring concert for King Triton. Jasmine splashes in the puddles left by a spring shower. Aurora greets the animals that arrive in the forest to announce the end of winter. Cinderella has a spring wedding. Belle plants a spring garden. That's a lot of princesses to pack into a 32 page book!
The text in this book is fairly large and the number of words on a page can vary between 8 and 16. I have a reader who will try to sound everything out and even test out different sound combinations (varying vowel sounds, trying out hard/soft TH) which comes in very handy with words like "stroll" and "gather".
The illustrations are lovely and any true princess fan will instantly recognize her favorites.
Even though my daughter claims to be over princesses, she is reading through this book, at my request, in order to master some of the more difficult words and attain reading fluency. It's a pretty little book and while it's not one that I would choose to read to my child over and over, I don't mind having my child read it to me again and again. It's really fun to sit down with a book that has a few difficult words and watch my child grow into the reading.
Winter is over
Not it is spring
Ariel and her sisters
sing for the king
Everyone gathers to see all the flowers
They dance and sing
for hours and hours
The salt water is warm
It smells of spring
A springtime fair
is the sweetest thing
This book is a particular favorite of my 6 year old daughter's. She loves the fact that she can now read books on her own without any help. Step Into Reading Level 2 books are geared towards Preschool-Grade 1 students. My daughter, who is in first grade, can easily read this book without any assistance--though I should mention that she is an advanced reader and has actually graduated to Level 3 Step Into Reading books, which are geared towards Grades 1 - 3. So, if you have an advanced reader, you might want to keep that in mind.
On the positive side the pictures are beautiful and character illustrations of the same quality as the movies. My daughter loves having me 'read' this book, however she doesn't actually like me reading it, but rather focusing on the pictures so she can describe what is happening. It's almost worth it for that because there is enough going on in each page that she can make up a new story for each picture each time we read the book.
Essentially, I would not recommend this book aside from the pictures, and I wonder whether I'd have the same issues with other "Step into Reading" books, or just with Disney Princess books from this publisher. Although the other "All Aboard Reading" 'Station Stop 1' book I ordered has far more words per page, and more complex sentences, the words are simple (NOT poetic) and my daughter can actually recognize some of the words-I much prefer that system for beginning readers!
