"Packed with tips about the most useful baking tools and the best ingredients, the book has excellent recipes." —Saveur

"Levy's warm personality, step-by-step instructions, and vibrant color photos make this the perfect addition to the bookshelf of both budding chefs and seasoned pros." —SheKnows.com

This cookbook is terrific. Although I am not any kind of chef, I bought this book as a gift for my Mom. Before I gave it to her I tried a few of the easier recipes and they turned out fantastic. I really liked how the author ranked the recipes on a 1-5 scale to let me know the difficulty of each recipe beforehand. I have eaten at Sarah's Pastries and candies in Chicago quite a few times. In case you dont know about her, the author Sarah Levy owns some retail stores in Chicago which make some of the best sweets in the city (if you havnt tried her "royaltine" you are missing out!) This book is a terrific gift! It has beautiful pictures throughout and offers excellent insight and instruction, tips and advice on how to cook/bake etc. This book is great for all levels too as it offers a wide range of recipes starting from sopme geared for terrible cooks (me) all the way to some recipes which I sense could offer a challenge for a top chef...

Author Sara Levy has written a well-thought out cookbook, Sweetness: Delicious Baked Treats for Every Occasion, as the author offers a rating systems for ease of preparation and assorted baking helps throughout her cookbook. Her writing is friendly and inviting and should help novice bakers get over their fear of baking. Any book that does this receives an A++ in my book as I love to bake, and I would love to have other people join in learning how to bake. It's so much better to make your own baked goods, as it's not only cheaper, but it you know exactly what you are eating.

My only complaints: I wish the book was written in a standardized recipe format. Most cookbooks today list the ingredient amounts to the left and the ingredients to the right. This cookbook does not do that. Also, the long recipe introduction is a bit confusing until you realize this is how the cookbook is written. The table of contents should list the actual name of the recipe. Instead you will read "A Christmas dessert that will become a tradition" which translates to Sour Cherry Pie. As a baker I would prefer a table of contents that lists the actual recipe name rather than a recipe introductory title.

You will find a good selection of recipes in this cookbook. Some of the recipes you will find in this cookbook include:

Grandma Eadie's Double Chocolate Chip Cake
Holiday Vanilla Bean Sugar Cookies
Sour Cherry Pie

There is an active table of contents making navigation easy.

Recommend.

There are some good recipes in here, such as Uncle Page's Popovers, but one recipe was so far off as to be inexcusable. The Chocolate Buttercream Frosting recipe on p. 64 was a complete flop. I followed the instructions exactly and it came out running and completely unusable. It's VERY different from other buttercream frosting recipes I've found online. I wish I had check those others sooner.

If anyone has suggestion or thoughts on why this recipe might fail so badly, I'd appreciate your response and advice.

This cookbook would probably be great for someone who has never baked before and is wanting to venture out of the boxed cake aisle. The cover and description made it sound much more involved than it is. Very few recipes, very basic, and nothing special.
I was disappointed.

Great, great recipes in this little kindle freebie and it would have been worth the $$ price for some of the recipes in the book.

The author rates the recipes in the book for ease factor. I will say that I had to disagree with some of the recipes that she rated as "easy". As someone who has been baking for over 30 years, I do think that novice bakers would have difficulties with recipes she has rated as easy. Second, the book contains a large number of more difficult recipes, so in my humble opinion, this isn't for the novice baker, but the recipes she gives are restaurant or bakery quality.

If I never use a recipe, this book has become my encyclopedia for baking. The author taught me so much about baking in general. How different flours effect things, what certain ingredients are, etc, etc, etc. Also, there are good pictures and instructions within the recipes. Thanks so much - this is a great resource.

I have yet to actually try any of the recipes in this cookbook, but just from reading through them they all look delicious. Levy makes sure to rate each recipe on difficulty, which is helpful to people who are new to cooking. The biggest complaint that I have is that the grammar and spelling is terrible. You can tell that no one even bothered to check for correctness at all. While this may be somewhat of a petty complaint, it is very distracting. Also, the format for an eBook isn't the best; it's a bit choppy. In a regular book it would probably be fine but for an eBook it can be a bit frustrating.

This book is a big disappointment. My teen granddaughters know enough about baking that this book would bore them to death. I turned page after page before I even found a recipe and it was nothing special. I was expecting some very professional recipes and got just plain fare.
