His teaching has started a new way of thinking for me. Coming to the realization that Jesus was living in a Jewish culture, using a lot of Jewish idioms and phrases. We, who live in the Western world have many times no idea what they mean. I myself have lived and worked in 4 different countries. Many idioms in German translated into English will make no sense at all and vica verca. Even having lived in the USA and now in the UK I am dealing with one language, but different meanings of the same word. As time goes on I am starting to learn those different definitions of words. Besides that, many words, idiom or phrases have particular meanings that are connected to the local culture. Taking these words, idioms and phrases out of the local culture will leave many people clueless of its intended meaning.
Shortly after I moved to Scotland, the lady at the local grocery store smiled at my while I checked out and she told me: "See you later". Did she fancy me and wanted a date??? No, here in the region of Scotland it just is another saying for good bye.
Jonathan Gainey is picking up on this and is explaining the original meaning of certain words, phrases or idioms.
Knowing these insights helps us to better understand the intention of the writers.
Thanks to Jonathan Gainey's teachings I have gained a much deeper understanding of God's word and it has revolutionized my ministry.
