Sept 5, 2013 Update: We have had this for two months now and the net is completely gone the sun/salt water destroyed it. For next summer I will be ordering a couple more for under five dollars each. The rust hasn't increased from the first report. I have added pictures.
Shipping: The speed of shipping was great! We contacted the company and told them we needed this set for a party and they responded quickly and guaranteed it would be here in time. And it was! There was no damage to the box.
Setup: Setup was very easy and only took about 20 minutes. Instructions are clear and easy to follow.
(What we liked): SIZE - This is the perfect size for an in-ground pool. The height of the pool was perfect and even offers the option to adjust to 3 height levels. For our pool we set it on the highest setting and it was perfect. BACKBOARD SHAPE: Unlike other hoops you will see, the backboard edges are shaped to direct the ball back into the pool. While I rarely miss :) this is a great feature to help keep the ball in the pool. STURDINESS: You will not find a sturdier hoop set under $500. The sides fill with water and do an incredible job of stabilizing the hoop. The set doesn't shift around one full of water.
(What we don't like): BACKBOARD DECAL - The one included in our package had an 8" rip in it. Even without the rip we would probably not have used it. It's a cheap promotional quality sticker and would fade quickly. You'll notice in their picture that it's just the company name and not a square like other backboards. We decided to paint a box on our set and it's worked out great. PLASTIC BOTTOM - The sides of the hoop set are water tanks that stabilize the set. The bottom of these tanks are plastic. If you are putting your set on concrete be careful not to drag or slide as you could easily put a hole in the tank. We grabbed a can of spray rubber from HD and coated the bottom of each tank for extra protection. It is sturdy and shouldn't slide unless you force it to. RIM QUALITY: We were able to overlook the other minor issues until the rim became the deal breaker. If you are still reading this review, please be aware that the rim is cheap and will not last long. Unfortunately, the company cut corners on quality here and it's what's taken the product from great to cheap. After 3 days all of the screws began to rust. I am including pictures of day 3 with this hoop. The bracket used to support this rim is extremely cheap. It will bend easily. We have not allowed any dunking on our set but after 4 weeks the hoop was bent to the point where we are already having to replace it. The bending is caused by the ball hitting the front of the hoop. They include a lightweight pool ball (a little heavier than a beach ball) and it you only use that you should be fine. We ordered the pool basketball Amazon recommends with this set. We like this other ball much better but after 100 hits or so to the front of the rim it has bent to the point where it needs to be replaced. The price on this set is good and everything else is great but please know that you will be buying another (better) rim to replace the cheap one they include.
I have reached out to the company and asked for their comments on the ripped sticker and rim rust. I will post an update once I have it.
Should you buy this set? If you want to stay under $500, then yes, but find a better rim and install on day 1. I will be ordering a new rim and will update on which one I went with.
