One of the key features of this series is generally the romance between Ally and Mark, but things are a bit different this time around. When we first see Ally in “Swimming with Sharks,” she’s trying to convince best friend Lizzie not to knock Mark’s teeth out for ending their relationship. But with the help of her friends Lizzie and Larry, Ally is learning to enjoy life again. She’s also on relatively good terms with Jack, even if she isn’t exactly over the moon about having him move in with her. All in all, the characters are likable and the author does a good job of balancing Ally’s sleuthing with her personal life.
There isn’t a whole lot of action in this book, but the narrative does offer a couple of exciting beats and a fair deal of suspense. The stakes also feel pretty high throughout, as this is a mystery in which Ally is personally involved. As is usual for this series, there is a fair balance between humor and intensity, as the plot is serious yet Ally’s interactions with friends Lizzie and Larry have a tendency to bring a bit of cheerful color to many of the proceedings. Anyone who enjoyed the first two books will definitely enjoy this one, and many first-time readers are likely to seek out the author’s other work.
The set up is unexpected and bound to leave the heroine in the path of trouble. Having her ex-husband Jack Doretta back in her home due to his financial and new wife issues would be bad enough. However, the troubles that follow him lead into a riveting story.
I really enjoyed the dual mystery elements of the story. Why Jack was in trouble and why Ally was involved. But more so what Ally didn’t know about her ex-husband.
Jeanne Lamb-Carlin has a unique writing style. Her plot is well thought out and leads to plenty of surprise and situations to keep the pages rolling on.
The Allison Taylor series has delivered again. I cannot wait for the next instalment in the series and can highly recommend Swimming With Sharks (Allison Taylor series Book 3) by Jeanne Lamb-Carlin to you.
I wanted so badly for Mark and Allison to get back together but it didn't happen. I feel like Allison is too stubborn and afraid to trust. The other characters are very realistic evoking humor, sadness and other emotions from the reader. The story pace is faster than the other books with a ending that leaves you wondering what will happen next. I will have to admit that Ms. Lamb-Carlin has become one of my new favorite authors! Can't wait for Book 4!
