Editorial Reviews

Inspired by such 'pick yourself up by your bootstraps' British comedies like The Full Monty and Calendar Girls, this cute comedy deftly mixes slapstick with insights on such issues as gender rivalry and the unfashionable appearance of middle-aged men in swimsuits! Unemployed, divorced, and estranged from his daughter, Frederik (Jonas Inde) is stuck in Loserville with no hope of getting back on the right track. However, his luck changes when a botched prank gives him the idea to mold his motley buddies into Sweden's only all-male synchronized-swimming team, with the World Cup finals in Berlin as the seemingly unattainable goal. Funny, charming and totally unconventional, The Swimsuit Issue is the complete feel-good package for everyone, bringing out the synchronized-swimmer in all of us.

Some films are just designed to be unabashed and unapologetic crowd pleasers and the Swedish delight "The Swimsuit Issue" executes this task with precision. An ode to brotherhood and synchronized swimming, I'm not the first (and nor will I be the last) to compare this movie with the equally charming "The Full Monty." Neither film originated this genre of feel good cinema, but both use its conventions to excellent affect. Where the Monty gang resorted to stripping in times of financial hardship, the Swimsuit boys enter the competitive arena of synchronized swimming as a sort of psychological contest to validate their middle-aged worthiness. Thoughtful, funny, outrageous, and appropriately touching when necessary--this film hits all the familiar beats and yet still manages to seem surprisingly fresh. You may know exactly where this journey will take you, but the ride is thoroughly enjoyable!

Leading our unlikely band of heroes is the charismatic Jonas Inde, an irresponsible man-child with a strained relationship to his teenaged daughter. What begins as a bachelor party joke soon begins to achieve legitimacy as Inde realizes that synchronized swimming was once an all male sport. Enlisting his buddies to try for a place in the upcoming World Cup, however, is just the start of the comic mayhem. With requisite hilarity, the men bumble their way toward success and acceptance fending off reverse discrimination and veiled assaults on their masculinity. As Inde's daughter assists the newly formed team, the improbable soon begins to look possible--but there are still plenty of speed bumps along the way.

With nice bits on friendship and the thawing of a complex father/daughter bond, there are numerous moments of sweetness in this film.

"The Swimsuit Issue", the latest film from Swedish director Mans Herngren, was a big hit at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. I was hoping to see it in U.S. distribution. It has a fine and original story line -- a group of thirty-something guys lose their arena hockey playing space and switch sports to fit what space is available. It happens to be a swimming pool; and the new sport for the disenfranchised aging jocks is synchronized swimming. A lot of grief follows as the sport is rarely practiced by men and for most, a masculine form just doesn't provide the same level of grace and beauty that the women's sport does. For the guys on the new team--a disparate group that has more slackers than hotshots--it becomes a matter of pride and way to prove to themselves and their families that they are not chronic losers.

The film has a lot of heart and humor. Director Herngren skillfully gets the best out of a very good cast and avoids the slapstick and melodrama that could have torpedoed the story line. While the film has a recognizably Swedish context, its appeal is universal and should be popular with any audience. Recommended.

The way the daughter learns to accept her father, the way he learns to accept change & go w/ it, the acceptance of gays by his homophobic teammate all go a long way to making this story a keeper. I have lent it out to all kinds of people & it has not failed yet to win them over. It is humanity in a small box!

Well made, simple, escape film from Sweden.

It was not made to be the second coming of Citizen Kane. Yet, there are great perspectives on parenthood, competition, sexism, sport, relationships, friendships, homophobia, and other social issues.

At some point this film went from an escape "movie" to something with care, heart and soul!

Swimsuit Issue is a fun ride.

In the end, we are immersed in the film and we want to see more!

GREAT JOB!
