I bought thus because I wanted songs from the original soundtrack that are hard to find on most streaming services today.
But James Horner, the film's music supervisor, wisely gave associate Robert Haft and arranger Chris Boardman the resources to get first-rate modern recordings of "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" (with a gem of a vocal performance by Janice Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer), and a medley of "Life Goes To A Party/Jumpin' At The Woodside", as well as an up-tempo version of Django Reinhardt's "Daphne". There are also remastered originals by Benny Goodman (I wonder how "Flat Foot Floogee" would translate into German..!)
Horner's own compositions contribute to the film's increasingly dark and uneasy mood, as the freewheeling Hamburg of 1939 is subjected to increasing repression by the Gestapo. It's a look at a lost world as it slides toward a brutal decline, and the rousing swing-dance sequences contrast harshly (of necessity) with the frank terrorism of a police state's crushing dissent. Not an easy album in all departments, but worthwhile.
There are other awesome NEW recordings in this CD as well like "Shout and Feel It", "Daphne", "Life Goes to a Party" and "Bei Mir Bist du Schon". It's as though Benny Goodman's band was transported to today and freshly recorded their music using today's technology.
The CD also includes some original versions of songs (as well as the scratchiness of an old vinyl recording) like "Swingtime in the Rockies" which still sounds good. The "oldest sounding" award has to go to "It Don't Mean a Thing" which sounds like you're listening through an old Victrola.
Then of course peppered throughout the CD are the somber tones of Horner's original music for the movie.
This is a "must have" for great sounding, hi fidelity Swing Music.
