DESCRIPTION: Kevin Costner stars in the hilarious timely comedy Swing Vote as Bud Johnson, an Average Joe, who is coasting through life with the help of Molly, his wise-beyond-her-years daughter. In a remarkable turn-of-events, the result of the presidential election comes down to his vote. Costner is joined by a brilliant all-star cast including Dennis Hopper, Kelsey Grammer, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci and George Lopez who will stop at nothing to win over the vote of the man who holds the fate of the free word.

The ghost of Frank Capra is summoned up in Swing Vote, a populist comedy about the U.S. presidential election--because of an electoral deadlock--coming down to one man, one vote. Alarmingly (for the future of the world), that one man is Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), a beer-swilling, newly-unemployed divorced dad in Texico, New Mexico. Bud's got a week to re-cast his flawed ballot, so the entire election process--including the two candidates, played by Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper--descends on Texico for an orgy of campaign flapdoodle. Costner tries hard (probably too hard) to be the irresponsible good ol' boy, the kind of role he used to be able to handle with ease; by contrast, the composed Madeline Carroll, as his Little Miss Sunshiny daughter, comes off as a model of naturalism. Except for some pointed commercials, in which the candidates sell out their values to appeal to Bud's whimsical opinions on issues such as abortion and gay marriage, the movie's political bite is remarkably toothless. Both Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane are in the groove as cutthroat campaign managers, and the movie is jolted out of its beery idle with a late one-scene performance by Mare Winningham. There's an interesting film trying to climb out of Swing Vote, but it needs Frank Capra to kick it into shape. --Robert Horton

(This is *not* the 2009 Disney Studios Blu-ray which was reviewed on the highdefdigest website)
There is only a simple "Play Movie" menu, and no scene selection menu. Six arbitrary scene index points are available (only through the player remote control) whereas the original studio DVD and Blu-Ray have 13 chapters.
Audio is Dolby Stereo in English.
No subtitles.
No foreign language audio.
Image quality is marginally better than the DVD, but this is a story-driven film, not the sort of picture which depends on striking visuals in order to make an impression.
None of the bonus featurettes of the original editions are included, nor is the notable writer/director audio commentary. (one of the most interesting of these I have heard)
The original Disney Studio DVD and Blu-Ray releases are full-featured discs offering a Dolby Digital 5.1 main audio track, (DTS 5.1 on the Blu-Ray) supplementary Spanish/English audio tracks and subtitles, and writer/director commentary audio track in both English and Spanish. (all with subtitles to match!)
I wish I had known these things before making this regrettable, disappointing-in-all-respects purchase. If I can't find the original Blu-Ray, I'm sticking with the DVD. Really, it's better.
Im really very impressed by Kevin Costner - all these years after Dances With Wolves (which was a great great movie) he brings us this treat which is so totally different - - but also world class. Thanks.
Funny movie. Family safe movie, too, which is nice in these days of so much sex and violence and innuendo in movies.
If you haven't seen it, you ought to check it out. If you have seen it, I hope you agree with our review and share it with others!
It managed to be comedic, even while dealing with important issues. I laughed really hard at the candidate's not-so-subtle attempts to influence Bud, and especially enjoyed their TV commercials.
A great movie for any election season. I'd definitely watch it again.
The movie itself is solid - a creative story told with energy. Costner is great. It's wholesome, but will address everything from abortion rights to illegal immigration. Even though Stanley Tucci encourages voter suppression, both parties are presented respectfully. Great supporting cast. I appreciate that!
