For some reason, now it is difficult to even get the can opener to grab the can around the rim. When it takes 10-15 attempts to affix a can to the opener, there is a big problem with the opener. I even asked my husband to try and he got so frustrated.
I really stand by wall mounted can openers, but this one is definitely not recommended.
OK, had this for a couple months now, and I never open a lot of cans, anyway, so I'm pretty disappointed that this is failing already. I knew out of the box that it was different, and much stiffer, but I'd hoped it would loosen up after some use. No such luck, but additionally, it's now not even opening the cans. They either disengage half way through, or the handle turns but the can doesn't. Geeze, if I'd known it was going to be such a different opener, I would have stuck with my old one. It was dull, but at least it worked.
I can no longer recommend this to anyone. Bummer. : (
This one's OK. I've had one of these for decades, and occasionally, the blades get dull, so you have to buy a new one. I love the style and convenience of these, and I hate the electric can openers, and the hand openers, so these are great to have. It fits the wall mount I already had, so it was an easy switch out.
Unfortunately, It's not as nice quality as the one I replaced. It has a different knob - that feels kinda tacky to the touch, while my old one was super smooth. This feels different when I put a can on, too. It's stiff, and doesn't feel quite the same. Maybe it's just in need of some use to loosen up. So far it works, and the blades are sharper, but if I could have just replaced the blades, I would have kept my old one. Seriously, I don't know why everything has to change. The old one was great.
If you've never owned one of these, they're great. Don't let my nit-picking stop you. I'm just spoiled by the old one I had, and wanted to get the same one. This is a little different, but still way better than the electric or hand models.
The metal the body is made of is thin.
It is impossible to engage the cutting wheel without tipping the can to place it under the cutter. So if the can has any liquid in it, like soup, it makes a huge mess.
Also, because of the thin metal of the body, the opener fits very loosely inside the slot on the bracket and constantly pops out, which requires one hand to hold the can and the other to do double duty - turning the handle and holding the opener in the slot.
What an annoying waste of money.
1. There are three detents to keep it in place (two for storage, one for use). The detents are too big, so the whole thing flops around slightly when in use.
2. Removing a can after opening requires tipping the can about 5˚ sideways. If it's a full can of soup, you will spill onto the counter/floor.
3. The metal piece that locks onto the can requires a huge movement of almost 180˚. Annoying. My old counter-mount had a similar piece that only needed to move about 10˚ to latch.
4. In my test, the blade only cut 95% through the can lid.
5. As others have said, the build quality appears very poor, and I expect it would break after a few years or less. I was willing to take that risk at first, but after seeing how bad it functions, I returned it.
