Pros: It is still cutting as well as it did a year ago. I've cut cardstock, chipboard, and paper - probably totaling a few thousand cuts. Also, it is sturdy. I've had no issues with cracking or sticking. It balances well.
Cons: The biggest, and the reason for my low rating, is that the handle/blade/grid are not properly aligned. If you align your paper to the vertical grid, it will be off. If you align it to the horizontal grid, it will be off. If you guesstimate, it will be off. Cutting perfectly even paper requires pre-measuring with a ruler for my unit. Also, the latch that is supposed to hold the handle down rarely secures it for more than a few minutes. Then, it falls off. Finally, you must hold the paper down close to the guard bar or you'll get slippage toward an incorrect cut.
I'm finally going to break down and buy another paper cutter. It's sad because this one still cuts but the hassle of never having even pages without a few extra steps is more than I want to deal with right now. I hope that my unit was just defective and no others are having this issue. Still, I thought I'd share a review in case it happens to someone else. I didn't ask for a replacement because I always thought I must be doing something wrong. Finally, after a year of botched cuts, I asked someone else to try it. When their cuts also failed, I realized it is the tool.
It arrived safely packaged in a box. Opening it up, I was excited that it was lightweight and easy to hold. The lock on the side extremely secure! For being so small, I was amazed how well it keeps the blade locked down (others I've used have easily unlocked and the blade has started to flop around while this one does not!). Even unlocking it takes a little work, which lets me know it won't easily open if a child is using it. The blade itself is sharp and can cut several sheets of fabric easily and quickly. In fact, I was able to cut two sheets of felt with it and while getting it under the green safeguard bar was a tight fit, the cut was perfect!
I love this paper cutter and am so glad that I have it!
- Easy to use and operate
- High quality blade
- Lightweight and mobile
- Won't cut a high number of sheets at the same time
The trimmer is mostly plastic and feels lightweight, but it stays stable when cutting and is solidly built. The lightness of the unit is actually a plus for me sincce I keep it in the closet until I need it. It's easy to move around.
Assembly is easy -- you basically slot the arm in and you're ready to go. I use my 12-inch model about once a week. I cut about five sheets at a time to make sure the cut is straight, but I think you could get away with up to 10. The same is true for the 15-inch model.
I'd give five stars to this unit if it were just a bit less expensive. But compared to a wooden cutter, the price is reasonable. If I were using the cutter more often and to cut more than paper (say, thicker paper or cardboard stock), I'd think about getting a more sturdy model. But with this model, the blade stays sharp and is more than adequate for paper cutting.
