The package claims that it is "8-in-1." Frankly, the "8-in-1" is a stretch, because one of the "8" is a key ring fob. Seriously, counting a key ring fob as a "feature"? If this knife had 20 or 30 features, then the key ring fob might be significant. Exclude the incredibly, never before seen, fabulous key ring fob, this corkscrew tool is "7-in-1."
When I first opened the corkscrew tool, the tool had some resistance to opening and closing. I discovered that the resistance on my tool rapidly decreased and now the corkscrew tool is somewhat floppy. In other words, the corkscrew tool will no longer stay closed, or open, when handling the tool. All my other tools that have a blade have sufficient resistance to keep the tool either open or closed, so I consider the lack of a similar feature on this tool to be a disadvantage.
In addition to the SUPER DUPER INCREDIBLE KEY RING FOB, and the corkscrew, this tool has three screwdrivers, a bottle opener, and a knife that the package advertises as a foil cutter. I find it difficult to be impressed. The screwdrivers are relatively small, meaning that they might be useful for tiny little screws slightly larger than screws associated with jeweler's screwdrivers. Of course, most screwdrivers included with pocket knives tend to be small. The knife is short, which might make it great for cutting the foil on a bottle of wine, and some other similar tasks, but not much more than that.Read more ›
According to the description this is a great gift for a wine enthusiast, really? That must be the problem I am not a small handed wine enthusiast. Well, I ended up giving this to my 9 year old son and it fits his hands just fine. Still better, he has now become a "wine enthusiast" as I found him the other night in a dark alley behind the local Quickie liquor tossing back a bottle of ripple with some other "wine enthusiasts".
More recently, I have begun collecting smaller, key chain multitools. My favorite so far is a Swiss+Tech ST66676 Utili-Key 6-in-1 Key Ring Multi-Function Tool, which I've carried on my key ring for several years. I own 3-4 other Swiss+Tech multitools, so was eager to check this one out. I thought it was a silly little gadget until I started to play with it. The knife is sharper and sturdier than I expected. The screwdrivers will work in a pinch, and the bottle opener is, well, a bottle opener.
I was a little skeptical about the flashlight and the corkscrew, though. I couldn't imagine that the short corkscrew would work very well, but so far, it works better than the one on my Swiss Army knife. The flashlight is a simple on/off device, but brighter than others I've seen that are that size.
When my wife saw me playing with this multitool, she decided that it was just what she needed to carry in her purse. She uses the flashlight often, and says "you'll never know when you'll need a corkscrew".
Although I like this gadget a lot, I give it 4 stars because it is not as useful for my needs as some of the others that I own. I may feel differently if I hadn't shown it to my wife, who has now taken full possession of it, and actually got to use it for more than a few days.
I consider this a "last resort" corkscrew. It works, but...
It is small, rather awkward to screw into the cork, and likely to fail in some situations. With natural cork, I end up with a rather chewed up mess...bits of cork lying on the table when I'm done. Though it hasn't failed yet, I can imagine there will be times when the corkscrew will mangle the cork so much that I won't be able to uncork the bottle. Synthetic corks work better because their density makes them harder to mangle. So, the 3-star rating is based entirely on the corkscrew itself, which Swiss+Tech seems to be pushing as the central feature of this Multi-Tool.
Having said all that...If you are already carrying around a multitool set, but find yourself in wine emergencies requiring a corkscrew, you might consider upgrading to this. The included tools (small Phillips and flat screw drivers, LED light, and knife/foil cutter) are handy. The LED works well and is surprisingly bright for its small size.
As for me, though, I'd rather just remember to bring a more substantial corkscrew with me...for emergencies.
