Inviting friends over to share the joy of raclette cooking is a time honoured tradition in Switzerland, and the idea is rapidly spreading around the rest of the world. And why not? Sharing stories over drinks while creating personalized dishes is an activity everyone will love. And you'll be cooking with your friends, not for them.
The Swissmar Raclette Party Grill is heated by an element (varies by model), which simultaneously cooks the food on the top grill, and melts cheese on the trays below. The grill is incredibly simple to use and very quick to clean. Getting started is as easy as taking it out of the box and plugging it in. You'll have delicious plates of food for you and your guests to enjoy before you know it!

Although the grill comes with 8 pans, there's no way you can actually use this with 8 people. The usable stone surface is maybe 11-12 inches wide, so a perfect surface for 4 people. For a group of 6 people, you would need at least a usable surface of 15 inches and for 8 people closer to 18-20 inches.
The stone gets pretty warm, but doesn't get hot enough to get the sear that you would want from a stone grill. It seems that the heating element cycles on and off using a timer, instead of using a thermostat that measures the actual stone temperature. Maybe the lack of heat is caused by the use of granite instead of lava stone and it's only 1 inch thick, which is a little thin to hold enough heat.
The brackets that support the stone are very thin metal plates, resulting in the fact the the stone moves a lot, when trying to scrape it clean. It helps making the cleaning easier afterwards, but seems like a questionable compromise.
Lastly, the grill comes with 8 plastic scrapers, which you can use in the pans, to prevent damaging the non-stick coating. However, there is no metal scraper included, to clean the stone in between courses. Using the plastic scrapers, won't do much good, so you will either need to buy a separate scraper, or grill your food on the charred remainders of previous courses.
All together, it was a disappointing purchase...
We were eager to receive the new grill but unfortunately after opening he box, we realized the craftsmanship of the new model was not near as good as the older one. For example, the grill pans in the old model were very sturdy and well-made where as in the newer model (square shaped) they are very thin and flimsy. In addition, the older model was much cheaper in price than the newer version but the quality of the older model was much better.

Second thing is that the marble slab doesn't touch the heating element which I find odd. There's about a 1/4" space in between and it seems like that is just space for heat loss. I don't know if the marble would hold up to direct element contact but it seems like it would considering its stone.
We didn't have a problem cleaning. We would just let the stone sit over night to cool, then soaked in the sink with soap and water. The food just scraps off without an issue.
The size of it is definitely for no more than 4 people.
Alas after 2yrs the slab just broke in half while I was drying it with a towel. We never dropped it and was gentle when setting up/putting away.
As far as using it for raclette, it works great. It also has space for 8 pans (most others have only 6 spots) which is nice if you have more people over.
The cord is too short, so order a grounded extension cord if you don't have one.
My very first raclette grill was 240v, and it worked great. Other grills I have had over the years, 120v, were never as good. This one is 120v, but it works as well as my original 240v unit. It is the best 120v unit I've found so far. The heating elements are closer to the pans than most other units, and the element is exposed, which puts more heat on the cheese.
If you like raclette, this grill will do nicely.
$60 for the cast aluminum cooktop .
So far works great with the granite top the cooking oils , or fat goes everywhere, there is no drip pan quite messy
The cast aluminum holds all the cooking oils , until it overflows also ,
? So in my opinion because of the lack of any type of drip pan, I can only hope the quality holds up on the heat coil itself
I heartily recommend this Swissmar raclette with its granite heating plate.

I've used this multiple times so far and I must say that I'm extremely happy with it.
The only cons:
-Handles on the cheese trays bend easy
-Granite top stains (I put balsamic vinegar on it. My fault)
-Dedinintely not big enough to be an 8 person grill. However I never have 8 people for a grill party anyway.
What I do is, I prepare and cut up Beef, Pork, Shrimp, and Chicken. I marinate them in bowls for about an hour.
I cut up cheddar and havarti cheese and put them in bowls as well. The melted cheese goes great with Sourdough Bread!
Cut up asparagus, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms and put them in separate bowls.
Come food time, everyone sits around the grill and cooks their own things how they like it.
It's always great to have when we have friends over. Remember to always have the special ingredients: Cheese and garlic butter!
