The only downside to this device is not a fault of the device so much as it is a fault of my truck. Apparently, Toyota uses some unused pins on the connector to communicate "extended information" that doesn't strictly comply with the ELM standard. This causes the "ABS" light to blink on my truck. This is caused by the "autoscan" feature of this device to determine how to communicate with the vehicle's computer. I am going to try to put electrical tape over the pins in question to see if that fixes the problem (some people have physically cut those pins with success). This "ABS" blinking doesn't happen in my Toyota Van.
This could be fixed in the device if the device remembered the protocol to use, but it doesn't. I have to start Torque on my Android device first, and then plug the OBDII device in. Torque can force the OBDII device to use a specific protocol, but the device doesn't remember it between uses.
The last thing I would say about this ELM device is not a hardware problem, it is with the CD that came with it. I looked at the contents because I was curious, but by the filenames, it looks as though it contains the APK for Torque PRO (among other paid apps and utilities). I did not install anything for fear of viruses, but the fact that professional versions of software was on it is shady to me.
The unit itself is nicely made, and doesn't look or feel as cheap as some other ELMs. It comes nice in a nice package. The switch seems to shut off Bluetooth communication, but others have reported that it still draws power when switched off.
This unit may work with other apps and vehicles, but not for me, so I'll be returning it.
My only complaint is that it came with no readable instructions. That is, unless a README or similar file is found on the micro-CD that is shipped with the unit. But devices that can read these little pieces of media are somewhat rare nowadays. Still, things were relatively straightforward and I didn't need a manual.
