Top customer reviews
This hitch is a beast! Easily to spin & select between 3 ball sizes. But there is a fourth choice not mentioned that sealed the deal for me: A step. If you rotate the center ball upside down, the top becomes flat & makes a nice step. So I can choose 3 ball positions or lock it smooth for a step surface when the tail gate is up. Nice!
I was looking for a multiple ball hitch with best engineering, best finish, best features, most flexibility, hassle free PLUS a step feature. Something tough, minimal rust & easy to change between the ball sizes. Couldn't find it until this beast. Weighs about 20lbs & this class IV slides perfectly into my class III receiver. Extra weight is due to the solid steel shank vs most are hollow.
Arrived with no rust on the 14inch shaft or shiny steel balls. One of the balls had pitting (below). Paint was unexpectedly sloppy & not first class.
Chrome sticker on the shaft says assembled in USA with phone /contact info for the company in South Carolina. Steel & machining are not specified,...probably import. All holes aligned properly and installed without a hitch...
Tried to see from the Amazon description how many mounting holes were in the shank. If there were two then I could extend or shorten the shank in the receiver depending on the vehicle. But the Amazon website does NOT show the hole(s) in the shank. So I went to the company's website (http://www.switch-hitch.com) and saw in the video there were two 5/8 pin hole positions in the shank. But the one I received from Amazon only had ONE hitch pin hole,...meaning no flexibility for extending or shortening how far it sticks out of the receiver. Was not happy about that. There is other info on the website you might want to check out. I use the best 5/8 rust resistant stainless steel locking pin I can find to avoid five finger discounts.
Despite the awkward 3-ball shape, the hitch came shipped in a safe, secure box. However, the shipper (USPS) provided very poor tracking information. Part of the fun of Amazon is tracking package progress thru the shipping system (I know I live a sheltered life!). That way I can see where the product is in the pipeline & have confidence in the delivery date & schedule usage.
There is one, standard zerk grease fitting & accepted grease without a problem. I use a top grade marine grade grease that displaces salt /water & does not wash out. I wonder if the spring in the selector pin mechanism is stainless steel. IF not & it rusts out, that's trouble. So I sprayed some chain lube on the selector pin shaft (goes on thin then thickens) to avoid future problems.
Paint was a bit sloppy /big overlap on the base of the neck of the balls. Some may not care about looks,...but the stuff I hang on my trucks I want to both look good & perform. Attention to detail also gives me a clue to overall quality of the hitch in areas I can't see. Sloppy paint doesn't hurt performance, but it is disappointing.
BEfore buying I looked carefully at diff competitors: standard fixed 3 ball,... 3 ball w/hook,... stainless /non-stainless single & two ball arrangements. Most were about half the cost of this Switch Hitch Tri Ball. But I never liked always pulling a pin to switch the shank & rotate the balls or,...messing with rusty pins, rusty shanks, rusty locks, etc.. All I've got to do now is release that handy spring loaded pin & rotate,...every now & then hit the zerk with a shot of grease to keep things smooth. Easy peasy!
This is a SOLID square bar of steel that slides into the receiver,...which means not only is it tough, but since it's not hollow it's got fewer surfaces to rust. My other 4inch hitch steel shafts rust inside & out but here, there is NO inside to rust! I love it. Being solid it's heavy & doesn't rattle like a hollow tube rattles. This rotary hitch gets rid of many of the little announces in all the other hitches I've used over the years.
Another plus: I install it once & never really need to take it off. I like the protection it gives to the back of my pick up. It sure ended all those mysterious parking lot dings & gashes to my nice chrome back bumper. Also on the highway the sight of this thing helps aggressive drivers to back off. So it's a good deterrent & handy safety feature. Nice.
I looked around before buying & the company's home website for more info. http://www.switch-hitch.com. There's a helpful no-nonsense video & other info I'd sugg taking a look before making a decision to buy.
Rounding third: As I mention earlier, the paint was a little disappointing.Solid 3 way ball hitches I see on sale for $30. At $100 this switchj-hitch is a premium product & since it may only be installed once it needs /deserves a tough powder coat paint to inhibit rust,...not the weak double coat paint sloppily applied. Prior to installation, the paint accidentally touched a strip of my duct tape & when I pulled the tape off the shaft the black paint easily flaked off & stuck to the tape. Very poor paint adhesion. So I tested the rest of the shaft & the entire top coat of black paint came off easily. Obviously NOT powder coat. There was a second coat of black paint underneath & I was afraid to touch it with the duct tape. Steel needs a tough finish to resist rusting & because of paint shortcomings I rate the paint job as Average or a bit below average. So when installing the shaft I coated all surfaces with rust resistant undercoating to compensate for poor paint & minimize rust down the road.
Pitting on the 1 7/8 inch ball. There was noticeable pitting on the side of the ball about the size of a dime. This should not happen on any ball, especially on a hitch of this overall quality. Maybe I was unlucky,...if it were my business I would not have sent this out of the shop. Decided to eat these issues & not return /exchange....too big a hassle.
Bottom Line: This rotary hitch is no slouch. Love the 3-balls & a step selection. It's tough, beefy & a very convenient hitch 2nd to none. This is the only hitch I will buy in the future. With a little extra quality control this will be a killer hitch. To be honest, I'm a on the fence for a rating. If I overlook poor quality control, some pitting & poor paint, missing 2nd adjustment hole in the shaft, this hitch Earns a 4-STAR rating from me. Will give updates if anything significant. I hear a drop version is in the works.
I have a lock on my receiver pin and always hated having too unlock it before I was able to change ball sizes. Now I just pull a pin on the top of the hitch and can simply (twist) the ball size needed into position. This is a no brainer. Awesome absolutely awesome!
