First of all, I really enjoyed the book. The author clearly has the passion and has done the work to be considered an expert. The book is a fairly easy read that starts with the scientific studies and ends with the prescription for a lifestyle that will maximize one’s life. Here’s the thing . . . it’s a tough pill to swallow. The author is calling for intermittent fasting, keto diet and protein cycling all at once. While these methods are alternated and combined, the discipline required here is no joke.
I’m convinced that he’s probably correct and I want to say that I’m starting this tomorrow, but I’m just not sure I’ve got it in me. For reference, I completed a 70.3 mile triathlon last year.

The Switch: A 21st Century DIY book on life extension, anti-sging, and rejuvination
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2020Verified Purchase
This book is so good that my partner and I bought three copies; one for each of us, and a third for a physician friend.
Your cells have a master switch controlling growth and repair versus damage removal. To make new repairs you must remove old damage. Years of buildup of un-repaired damage can promote cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, adult onset diabetes, and aging itself. “The Switch” tells you how you can flip your switch to slow and even partially reverse your aging. These do it yourself anti-aging methods are simple, safe, inexpensive, scientifically sound, and include 23 pages of scientific literature citations.
“The Switch” is a breakthrough 21st century anti-aging book!
Durk Pearson (MIT 1965), scientist and co-author of the #1 million copy best seller, “Life Extension, A Practical Scientific Approach”
"MURDER AT THE DUMP: THE CASE OF THE DEADLY LEFT-OVERS" Hmmm. The real title of this book is "THE SWITCH”, which explains two important processes that affect aging, one that promotes growth and largely speeds aging, while the other promotes waste removal, which is necessary for repair, and slows aging. With extensive documentation, the book shows how you can help decide which process is predominant at what time. This is the practical scientific approach for taking advantage of the switch.
Live Long & Prosper,
Sandy Shaw, B.S. Chemistry (UCLA, 1965) co-author, "Life Extension, a Practical Scientific Approach”

You may not realize it but it is easier to become a billionaire than it is to live over 110. If you live that long you are called a supercentenarian and this is a very exclusive club. There are approximately four times more billionaires in the world than there are supercentenarians. Of the 70,000 or so Americans who live to be 100, only some two dozen are typically alive at 110.
James Clement is an extraordinarily dedicated and committed citizen scientist that is leading the charge to change these stats and not only increase the number of years we live but our healthspan which is the number of years that we are enjoying our health free of disabilities and disease and functioning just like we were in our 40s and 50s. He did pioneering work with his Supercentenarian Research Study in which he collected blood, skin or saliva from supercentenarians in 14 states and seven countries over a six-year period. Many were still gardening, arguing, driving and flirting.
James shares many of the secrets in this fascinating and easy to read book. I have been a natural medical physician for nearly four decades and am convinced that the primary tools he reviews in this book are some of the most powerful strategies you can implement to increase your chances to become a supercentenarian. Among these are the title of the book or teaching your body how to seamlessly alternate between activating catabolism, or breaking down and anabolism or building up of your body.
He discusses in great detail how the mTOR pathway is the key to achieving this and he teaches you how to have your body dutifully turn this switch on and off. One of the most important strategies would be to limit the number of hours you eat per day or something called time restricted eating (TRE). Over 90% of people eat more than 12 hours a day and most of us eat more than 16 hours a day which is a prescription for metabolic disaster as we are rarely allowing mTOR to shut off. By simply limiting the number of hours you eat every day you can activate ancient pathways that are designed to optimize your health span.
James is a researcher to keep your eyes on as he is currently involved in well over a dozen simultaneous aging reversal research projects in his lab. This book will be a great primer to help improve your health so you can implement the next findings that will result from his current research that can take you to the next level and help you reach 110 with full functionality.

I've read lots of books on health and diet. The Switch by James W. Clement has been the most helpful for me. I really appreciate the information that he shares. I think I've been following quite closely his outline, even before reading the book; I was doing intermittent fasting, and it works for me. I tried carnivore, and it was not quite what I needed. I don't have autoimmune issues like some do. I like his list of "Unlimited Foods", I have to watch the oxalates, so the smaller portions list works for me. I do think macadamia nuts are way overpriced, and other nuts will work for me; I like his list of oils. I have been eating more fish, mostly wild salmon. I really feel good eating salmon and not so much beef. Wild caught salmon is expensive, but by cutting out a lot of other foods and supplements I was taking, I can do it. I appreciate his list of supplements. When I was eating KETO, my total cholesterol shot up to over 300. I have to watch my blood pressure, and I think it's important for me to keep my cholesterol down somewhat. I have always exercised a lot, and I like that he encourages exercise. I'm 80 years old, and I want to have the best health I can have as long as I can. I really want to thank James Clement for writing this book and sharing what he has learned about health and diet. All of his information is so appreciated. Thank you!

I have read so much about Keto but always seemed there was something missing. This book has that something. It is the how and why of keto. Why for some carnivore works better and why for others like me the lower amount of protein and more fiber is better. It is how and why autophagy works and how you can easily control it. If it is about health and not just weight, then you want to read this book

The more I read it the more I like it.
Obviously the main point of the book is the switch - mTOR and authopagy.
The book is big on intermittent fasting and keto diet.
Chapter 9 is extremely useful: it has practical recommendations about what to eat or not to eat to implement the ideas explained earlier.
I think it is the most impactful book I read in the last couple of years. It is going to make a difference in my life, as I am going to incorporate many of its ideas.

He says,
"It pains me to watch someone order a plateful of fluffy buttermilk pancakes doused with lots of syrup and a side of bacon, followed by an order of cheesy pizza. Yes, I have witnessed this, and all I see is diabetes on a plate with heart disease for dessert. We deserve better."
So true, unfortunately.
