Format: Mass Market Paperback
This murder mystery does more than track a killer; instead it leads the reader through the personal growth of a police dective as he explores the mind of the killer. The plot twists are highly developed and expressive. This is one that I could not put down.

To read Switch is to understand immediately where writers like Thomas Harris and Michael Connelly came from. This is the book that showed everyone how to do it. Bayer keeps the suspense up while avoiding the clichés. He also makes the characters real without slowing the pace, and presents a story that's full of ideas as well as thrills and realistic detail. I'd like to think that the art of suspense keeps getting better, but as far as I'm concerned, Switch got it right, and the book is still as fresh as it ever was. If you love Harry Bosch, Bob Lee Swagger, and the other great cops of fiction, you'll read Janek and wonder where this great character has been all your life.

'Switch' is one of the great psychological murder mysteries set in New York and should be considered a classic in the genre. William Bayer is a virtuoso when it comes to profound characterisations and is a master in the contrast between good and evil. His killers are unique, dissecting the deepest abscesses of the tormented human soul, and yet very human in their agonised search for some kind of release from internal demons. Janek, the detective, is characteristic of William Bayer's hunters for justice. He is a cop with an artistic soul, conflicted and struggling with weighty spiritual problems himself. In the journey to uncover the killer and the motivations that drive him to murder, he inevitably redefines his own being. In the same way that darkness gives emphasis to the light, killer and hunter both gain definition from their counterparts as the tale unfolds. Finally, in William Bayer's novels, the location itself is a character in her own right, and 'Switch' is a tale of New York in her multifaceted, somewhat filthy splendour.

Every reader with access to e-books should make use of this wonderful opportunity to own a true classic by William Bayer.

The story was interesting enough, held my interest. I liked Janek's sleuthing ability, and the characters were likable enough. There was a lot of back and forth between the murder victims, seemed to drag a bit. I will consider reading another Janek novel, but it's not on the top of my list at the moment. Did not care for all the lovey dovey girlfriend parts, just seemed added but not overly important to the story. Somehow she annoyed me.

Amazing. This is not a CSI forensic driven police procedural. Janek is a detective on the trail of a psychological killer. All the hall marks of good prose is here - well written with deep characterizations. You invest in Janek, root for his team. Heads up - it is a bit dated, but holds up extremely well.

Designed to be more cerebral than for shock value even though the details of the homocide are specifically brutal. More coverage of the thought processes of the detectives than the murderer in this book which is an interesting perspective. Two cases at once so lots going on. I knew the Janek character from old TV movies, but now I'm interested in reading about some of the other characters developed by this author.

A most unusual story. Lots of interesting twists and turns. Kept you guessing all the time. Have never read anything by this author before and will look for other books by him. Would highly recommend it.

William Bayer really makes his characters come to life. Its light your right there and you find yourself asking the questions before Janek has the chance. I really love books like this one as well as the other two Janek books.
