About the author

Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980‘s she has researched the Mind-Brain connection and did some of the initial research back in the late 80's showing the neuroplasticity of the brain. During her years in clinical practice and her work with thousands of underprivileged teachers and students in SA and Africa as a Communication Pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist, she developed an original theory of how we think as well as tools and processes that have transformed the lives of patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD), autism, dementias, emotional mental health issues and has shown thousands of students and adults and corporations how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain. She currently teaches globally at conferences and churches and to secular audiences on these topics. Dr Leaf is also involved in the global ECHO movement training physicians worldwide on the mind and she has a panel of top neurosurgeons, neurologists, MD's, ob/gyn's, endocrinologists and neuroscientists that she consults and does research with. She has many YouTube, podcasts and video clips that she produces, reaching millions globally. Her passion is to help people see the power of the mind and the link between science and God as a tangible way of controlling their thoughts and emotions, learning how to think and learn and finding their sense of purpose in life.

One doesn’t have to examine Dr. Leaf’s teaching for long to find that it is full of flattery. Just search “dr leaf perfect you” and you’ll be taken to a page on her website (Amazon doesn’t allow links to be put in reviews). Here you will find Dr. Leaf telling you that you are a “set-apart designer babe!” And that, “There is something you can do that no one else can do…” In her book, “Switch on Your Brain” she says on p.84, “We should never underestimate how brilliant we are and that we are only limited by ourselves.” In her video “LOVE...POWER...and a SOUND MIND Dr Caroline Leaf” on YouTube you can hear her say, “So when you say you're not perfect, give yourself some slap therapy.” In her video “Prayer Overcomes Depression” (also on YouTube) you can hear her say, “You are supposed to be oozing out that divine sense of purpose to the world and blessing the world with the amazing you that you are.” She also states, "God needs us to pray constantly," in that video.
Undoubtedly Dr. Leaf is coming at us hard with flattery. She’s trying to make us feel awful special. Boy, God sure is lucky that He sent Jesus into the world to save such amazing people. I mean, why wouldn’t God send His Son to save brilliant, amazing, perfect designer babes who can do what no one else can do? Especially since He needs us? But then again, what in the world would we need to be saved from? The Bible tells us that Jesus saves us from God’s wrath: “and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come” (1 Thessalonians 1:10). Why would God be angry with us if we’re so awesome? Why would we need to be saved from God’s punishing anger if we are perfect? After all, only an evil god would punish perfect people. And that is why there is no place for Christ’s saving death in Dr. Leaf’s teaching.
According to Dr. Leaf’s teaching we are not made perfect by the sacrifice of Christ as we are told in Hebrews: “For by one offering He[Jesus] has perfected for all time those who are sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14). Instead, her website tells us, "The way in which you think and choose is the road to becoming ThePerfectYou." Even though Dr. Leaf tells us we’re perfect, it seems we still need to do some things to become…um, more perfect. I suppose it’s going to be tough to peddle all those programs, books, and DVDs if we don’t have anything to do. On p.66 of “Switch on Your Brain” she says, “Moment by moment of each day you can choose who you will be in the next moment, and these choices are captured in the resultant thought networks you build. In that process, the precepts of Scripture should be the overarching, undergirding, and foundational framework.” So we make ourselves perfect by obeying what God has said in Scripture. In other words, we make ourselves perfect by keeping God’s law. Dr. Leaf quotes many scriptures but it seems like she never came across Hebrews 7:19, which tells us, “for the Law made nothing perfect.”
So, in a nutshell, Dr. Leaf’s teaching is that you’re awesome and amazing and that you can make yourself perfect by what you do. Dr. Leaf also claims that her teaching is from God. But it is the devil, not God, who wants us to exalt ourselves and think highly of ourselves so that we will never see a need to believe in Christ to save us from the punishment that we deserve for doing things that we knew were wrong. Jesus said, "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted" (Luke 18:14). The only way to be saved from God’s righteous wrath is to recognize that we are sinners in need of a Savior to suffer our punishment on our behalf. Christ did not die for perfect and amazing people. There would have been no need for that. As Paul tells us, “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:6-8). You cannot have it both ways. You cannot exalt yourself with flattering words and exalt Christ. If you exalt yourself like Dr. Leaf does then you make very little of God’s grace and Christ’s work. As you can see, Dr. Leaf has made so little of it that it has disappeared. The fruit that we are supposed to produce is to glorify God. We glorify God by honoring His Son and His work: “so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him” (John 5:23). The fruit that Dr. Leaf produces dishonors the Son and dishonors the Father.
Dr. Leaf sounds nice and she seems sincere. She claims to be a Christian who is teaching things from God. She even tries to use the Scripture to confirm what she’s telling you to do. But don’t forget that Satan also did that with Jesus when he tempted Him in the wilderness (see Matthew 4:6). I’ll leave you with one last warning from Paul regarding false teachers: “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). Pray that God will grant Dr. Leaf repentance and that she will come to the knowledge of the truth. But hold up her teaching to the light of Scripture and encourage others to do the same instead of being deceived by her lies. God bless.
She has made me decide to buy a Bible! I was baptized in the Church of Christ at the age of nine years old, but saw so much decadence and misbehavior of Preachers I gave it up and devoted myself to Siddha Yoga...but also found questionable behavior there, but benefitted greatly from the Siddha practices. From the first chapter of Switch On Your Mind I felt a great need to buy a Bible even though I have been given Bibles and threw them away! Now I feel a need to own one and re-acquaint myself with its teachings. I have Dr. Caroline Leaf to thank for that.

She also produces a workbook and DVD, which I will look to buy. Dr. Leaf also appears on TBN, on further topics associated with this book.
Also, I would have liked to read more about the role of trauma and shame and how they prevent us from living wholeheartedly. If Dr. Caroline Leaf ever decided to collabrate with Dr. Brené Brown, their combined knowledge and approaches would TRULY change the world as we know it.
In addition, I was expecting to find a list of toxic thoughts and some examples of healthy ones to replace them, but this wasn't provided.
