I had actaully been looking forward to receiving this book, as like many, I recently switched to the Mac from Windows 8 and never looked back. But many Windows habits refuse to go away, that's why I was hoping a book like this could help me. The book is rather poorly organized for a switcher. It's okay as a general guide on Mavericks, and herein lies the problem. The author seems to have taken his other book on Mavericks and simply inserted an introductory chapter, a chapter about programs on the two platforms, an appendix that does not list Windows features like Remote Assistance and Task Manager, and then some casual comparisons in each chapter. The information is not presented in a way easy for a switcher. For instance, you'd think they'd have many handy comparison tables comparing functions and operations in the two worlds, like those "before" and "after" comparisons. Before in Windows, you do this, After in Mavericks, you do this, that sort of thing. No, you don't find them here. Wordy, difficult to read long paragraphs are used to describe simple differences. You don't get to see how many Windows shortcut keystrokes translate into the Mac world. For one thing, there's just a small table with 9 such shortcuts. You don't get to see how one can easily transition from the madly disorganized Control Panel in Windows to Mac's System Preferences; the preferences are just listed one-by-one. Why not write about them from a real Windows user's perspective? The short section on working with DMG installation files is so short and confusing to a Windows user, who likely never dealt with DMG before. And, to my big initial surprise, there's no discussion of how one finds Task Manager equivalent in OS X, one of the first things I tried to look up.Read more ›

This is the most complete, detailed book on this subject. As a new Mac user I bought several books to help me on this topic. This is the only book that answered all my questions....plus more. This is a. Must for every new Mac user.

My first Mac was a gift. Totally foreign to me as I've always been a PC user. Book is still very difficult. Explains what each function is, but doesn't tell you how to get there, so disappointed.

The Kindle version which I purchased is difficult to follow because the illustrations are too small. The printed version is recommended for this book.

Software and computer companies no longer give you any information except for setup anymore in their packaging. One can download manuals on your devices (tablets, phones, etc.), but I am a person that likes to highlight sections and instructions to refer back to later as there is much to learn when obtaining a new gadget. I do not just want to learn what is necessary to do only basic functions and always want to acquire an in-depth book to get to the meat of the gadget. This manual is set up in an easy way to explore some of these things. I used to use Que Publishing books, but they seem to have disappeared and this is a good substitute for those manuals. I purchased "Office 2011 for Macintosh" missing manual book also and love them both. Highly recommend.

I bought this manual when I purchased a Macbook Pro. Although the guide includes a lot of useful info, I learned (after many years of using a PC) to use the Mac via trial and error (as opposed to reading through the guide). I have kept the guide as reference in the event I need to look up something out of the ordinary.

Windows PC user for years using this manual has allowed me to transition to a new IMAC and quickly cross reference the information with a hardcopy of IMAC for Dummies series. Found out areas that were not addressed in other manuals. Worth the purchase but make sure you get the one for your specific OS.
