Works well, but have problem with MS Keyboard

The main reason I purchased this product was because it supported 1920x1200 with a DVI Interface. The product works as advertised. The switching between computers is very simple and they have the timing of the keystroke capture down really well. The item is compact and fits nicely in my server closet. My one and only complaint is that the USB keyboard port is not a pass-through USB port. I have a Microsoft Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader and when connected to the KVM none of my computers recognize the fingerprint reader (only the keyboard). Only when I connect the keyboard directly to the computers is the fingerprint reader recognized. This is very unfortunate since I really enjoy the functionality of the Fingerprint Reader. I have a trouble-ticket open with Avocent, but I am not hopeful.

UPDATE: I got a response back about my trouble ticket: "Currently Avocent KVM switches do not support the fingerprint reader keyboards. Due to the configurations and additional hardware Avocent is not looking into the support of the secure fingerprint reader access keyboards. The use of this type keyboard currently is not a supported device."

Also, another problem with the KVM is that if I reboot one of my machines and don't have the KVM port active for the machine that is rebooting, the video display no longer works on that port. I usually have to Remote Desktop to the machine and reboot it again with the KVM port active. Very annoying.

Best DVI KVM available although not perfect

Hello,

I recently purchased this Avocent Switchview 4 Port DVI KVM switch and I am happy to say that it meets most of my needs. Firstly, there is very little or no loss of video quality for resolutions 1600x1200 or above. The switch works perfectly as long as you have a USB Keyboard and USB Mice, EXCEPT, if the USB mouse you have is a trackball mice. I happen to own one of the Kensington Expert Pro Trackball mouse and it was not recoginzed by this switch. But you can always use a mouse through the USB hub provided in the switch.

Now, the hub has its own advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, I started getting Divide by Zero blue screen errors but later on I realised that those are coming from some device driver corruption. I thought that not plugging a mouse in the USB mouse port of the switch was creating those errors but that was not the case.

If you ever get Divide by zero errors that means that your USB Hub on the switch is overloaded, i.e. you have devices that are not fast enough to switch and get corrupted after 3 or 4 switches or simply because the switch cannot utilize two usb devices simultaneously. I had a Creative Audigy NX USB sound card and my kensington mouse plugged into it and I got Blue Screen errors after every 10 minutes. The moment I plugged out the USB sound card, the computers are running stable since then but at the same time I am not able to use my Trackball mice and USB sound card simultaneously which I was able to in Belkin SOHO DVI switch, although that switch had different issues.

I am giving this switch 5 star because it does what it says, although my expectations were a little bit higher so as to utilize 5.1 channel audio as well. Nevertheless, if a usb keybaord and mouse is the only thing you want to share between two computers along with your DVI monitor then this switch is perfect.

Hope my review helps those prospective buyers who are also planning to share their 5.1 or better usb sound cards with this switch.

Greatest Service Ever from Avocent

I bought this device since it met all my requirements. When I tried to install it, my monitor was not recognized by the switch. I tried a bunch of connections but no luck. I contacted Avocent tech support and spent some real quality time with one of the techs. He instructed me on how to update the firmware. It did not cure the problem so I called back the next day. They said they would issue an RMA. Now this is where it gets really AMAZING. They sent me a new switch in three days, BEFORE I had returned the old one. What great service!!! Also the further good news is the new box works really well. This is just such an unusual level of service and reflects great credit on Avocent and their employees.

Consistently horrible

I have been using these things for years. When they work, they work. When they don't, it's a nightmare.

I am sitting here with four of these, 2 ea. two port, 2 ea. four port. All behave differently.

The one that does not work at all is brand new.

I am sending it back.

And I am never, ever going to buy an Avocent product again.

THis switch was attractive to me because of its price. All I needed was a switch for video, keyboard and mouse. I do not need audio. As a video and keyboard switch, it works as advertised. However, with my PowerMac G5, and a Mac Mini, it cannot handle the Mighty Mouse. Most functions of the mouse do not work. So, I was forced to use two mice. While not too burdensome, it sure limits the functionality of the switch.

Requires reseting switch every-so-often

Have all my PC set to not sleep or have display sleep, even then every (approximately) couple months of regular use I have to power cycle the switch to get everything to work again. This seems to happen more frequently when I work from home (on major projects). Recycling the switch usually also requires me to hardboot or reset the PC so that I have keyboard/mouse/display control...

for $200, I thought this was expensive - but about the cheapest I found at the time for DVI and USB (had previously used various vga & ps/2kvm's) - I really like this unit, the features are good (albeit somewhat tricky to engage) like the ability to separate the audio from the kvm. No problems with USB 2.0 devices. Overall seems like a solid performer.
