I would definitely recommend this book to any fantasy reader.
Once upon a time, there was a fierce young noblewoman that had her life turned upside-down when she challenges the cruel crowned prince for a sword duel. Banished from her home, forced to leave friends and family behind, Darelynn Valeri finds herself in the slums. Homeless and friendless in a place without laws and where thievery is a form of life, Dare’s fate doesn’t improve. She comes face-to-face with Blaze, a famous and dangerous outlaw that proposes a bargain: if she can protect his sister from a group of assassins, she is free to stay in his territory. Will Dare be able to complete her task without revealing that the Prince is after her?
This novel is very addictive. The story-line develops at a steady pace and it’s told in the first person. I admire the author for the way she described this world. I would almost say that it felt real to me and by the time I finished, I actually got sad for it. I felt like I wasn’t just in the story but that I was part of it. The style of writing is both amazing and admirable.
The characters are likeable and it’s easy to love and hate them. Prince Jasper is naturally cruel and vicious, easy to hate. With no one to stand up to him, Jasper grows worse with each chapter. Darelynn, the female protagonist, is fierce, brave and an intelligent woman. Being responsible for the life of another, Dare keeps her word and sees to the end of the bargain not only for what she gains from it but for her own honour. Also, even though she ends up in a tight corner, Dare is still very much an independent woman, one of the qualities that I really appreciate in a female character.
Overall, a great read that I recommend!
I never tire of being amazed at the way an authors mind works, Devyn must have loved every second writing about Dare - the noblewoman turned exile after confronting the kingdom's heir and challenging him to a duel (way to go Dare). Imagine being able to lose yourself totally in another world, another era and to be able to share that world with those that read your written word.
I like the castle scene, it showed me the luxuries one could have in that lifetime, knowing what is expected of that role in life. It is a very structured yet safe and secure (or so one thought) way of life. Then going from that luxury to living among a place filled with the kingdom's criminal element, alone, scared, unsure where to find food and shelter, or if it will be safe. Being scared yet excited with a newly found freedom albeit it a forced upon exile. Will Dare survive living beneath her station.
The characters make you want to be a part of that life, to travel, with Dare, through a time of grief and despair from losing everything and everyone you have ever known to accepting what life throws at you, Dare is strong willed if somewhat unaware of potential dangers in her new life. Then there is Blaze, a criminal who runs things in the Blights, everyone is terrified of him, well everyone it seems except Dare. Then there is Garren, the older brother of Dare's best friend, of the king 's guard. That is just a few characters, the type that will make you smile when asked to describe them.
Devyn gives us the reader a very well written story, there was nothing I did not like and it all flowed beautifully. I will definitely will be fan stalking you now Devyn, I love your work.
A good book for most ages, no sexual content and minimal violence.
Author: Devyn Jayse
Genre: New Adult Fantasy
Thoughts: First off, the ending came way too soon!! I didn’t even realize I was close to the end of the book when the last page appeared. OMG this was so good!! NEED BOOK TWO NOW!!!! There really isn’t a cliffhanger, but the world, the characters, it just draws you in. This is one of the best fantasies I’ve read this month (I say month since I read so much lol). Dare is an awesome character, she’s tough and somewhat reckless but she has a good heart. And Blaze… I call dibs!! He’s like the mob boss of the Blights but through Dare we see a man with a heart. Can’t wait to get the next book!!
