I have to say that I love Sword of the Matchmaker. I was hooked from the start, seeing the strength and the determination of Penelope My heart just ached for her when she did not know where to turn. That is, until she meets Thomas. I just love catching up with Lady Brithwin - the main character from Debbie Lynn Costello's Sword of Forgiveness. She is still that lovable character and it was fun to see her try to get Penelope and Thomas together. I hope to see these characters in another book in the near future.
Both of the main characters are quite stubborn. While frustrating at times, it also seems realistic—I can't imagine living during this time. Penelope has to be stubborn to continue following what she believes is her calling as a warrior. At certain times it felt like she was determined to think ill of any man, but that seems reasonable given the obstacles she faced. And Thomas has to be stubborn to win her heart as anyone else would have given up long before succeeding.
The historical details were quite different than what I usually read, so the glossary is a helpful tool for readers unfamiliar with the period. I love reading a little about what life must've been like but the details about clothing, housing, and even food helped set the stage without overpowering the story.
With a short but well-crafted story that sometimes surprised me with laughter, I enjoyed my brief stay in the Medieval period. I would recommend this story for those looking for something different without too much of a time commitment. And if you enjoy it, be sure to read her full-length novel set in the same time period, or her other historical, which is the book that introduced me to her work.
I received a free copy of this novella but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a positive one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.
`Sword of Forgiveness` introduces the reader to Thomas and `Sword of the Matchmaker` is his story. Thomas Godfrey had no use for a warrior type woman. If he ever married he wanted one that was tender and sensitive. Other than that the only wife he wanted was his horse named `Wife`.
Penelope Beatty was a take charge woman. She had her own bow and arrows and was a sharpshooter with those. It had been years since she had worn a dress and wanted nothing to do with them.
It felt like the characters fit in well with the medieval era. My favorite part of the book was the ending because Penelope had run away and Thomas went looking for her. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I plan to go back and review the first in the series.
Disclaimer: I would like to thank the author for sending me this novella to review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Penelope has run out of options. Her clansmen have all but been annihilated by rival clans. Her only chance is to seek refuge with an Englishman who once owed her father a favor. But instead she meets the man's cheeky and proud son who will decide her fate in a foreign land.
When Brithwin, the playful but persistent lady of the manor plays Matchmaker, neither heart can withstand her persuasive ways or deny their feelings. But old habits die hard. Can a battle-seasoned lass accept this new master of her heart? And can a Master-at-arms make room to embrace a fiery lady his equal in both love and war?
You will just have to read to find out.
By:L Debbie Lynne Costello
I love the story and the characters, both were easy to follow and well developed. Costello had me hooked right at the start. Sword Of The Matchmaker is a wonderful Medieval Era short story. When nearly all of Penelope Beatty’s family and clan was killed, she took off on her own to find an Englishman that owed her father his life. She made up her mind long tome ago that she would not marry , she would be a warrior and fight along side the men. She is a very brave young Scottish Woman , but she needs help. Thomas has not seen this woman . He does not need a warrior lass for a wife. He wants a lady. There are feeling between these two. There is also some matchmaking that is going on for these two and no one can stop it. Can Thomas help Penelope ? Is his life in danger trying to help her?
I was given a copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive review.
