I recommend this novel. It’s a classic quest tale that isn’t ridiculously long. I tend to dislike fantasy novels that introduce a cast of thousands and throw them into a plot that is so complex and convoluted that it becomes confusing and feels like work to read. Reading novels should be fun and reading this one is. The plot is straightforward and touched with a bit of humour, the fantasy realm is well drawn, and the characters’ journey to the satisfying conclusion is entertaining.
The initial pull of plot in this book is a bit different to the others, in that Boyer disproves one great myth...the pen is not greater than the sword, at least not when it comes to reading this book.
The characters are well rounded, which makes it unfortunate that this book reads like a video game...bad plotting covered by good scenery.
