When I was younger, I spent a good deal of time poring over Masters of Orion, Spaceward Ho, and 4X games of lore, but as time has passed, this epic genre has fallen to the wayside.

With a fresh take on a classic formula, Sword of the Stars has taken the best components of empire building, and thrown in gorgeous tactical combat to boot. The result is a unique and refreshing reboot of dying genre, and a fun experience for anyone who fancies themselves an interstellar conqueror.

The randomized star systems, tech tree, and encounter system make each game unique, and experimentation is heavily encouraged. Here, your ships are fully customizable, and unlike other games, these changes actually matter. Instead of "Laser II" which is always better than "Laser I", we have weapons ranging from railgun accelerated ballistic rounds to high energy plasma torpedoes, and all of them are physically modeled. A single gauss round packs a punch, but the accuracy leaves something to be desired. But 12 ships firing full bore is sure to cause kinetic chaos. Likewise, a powerful beam weapon has incredible accuracy and firepower, but if a friendly crosses the fire path that sword becomes double edged.

One of the best modern 4Xs, Sword of the Stars is a must buy for any desktop general's collection.

This is a great Game. Its addicting, Fun to play, it has multiplayer support, its easy to play and hard to master. Its a combination of Civ III and Homeworld. The tech system is great. Its never the same game twice. the tech system compels you to use different system/weapon layouts to conquer your enemies. For example: in one game you can research anti missile point defense, stronger armor, etc.. But in another game you may not get those advantages but cloaking may be availible. (yup!) So now you sneak in your armada in the enemy system, shuffle up to max missle range drop cloak and drop a cloud of missiles on his head. Then drop back into cloak so you can scoot away and recycle missiles. At first i was disappointed in that but its actually pretty fun learning new tactics and testing out new techs you didn't have before. Like Masters of the Orion you can design Ships to your needs. Just Designing ships is a game in itself. It feels good upgrading your already awesome ship designs. The interface looks hard figure out initially. There are six video tutorials and a thick manual to explain everything. Just like SimCity a random event generator creates powerful things that roam around the Galaxy harassing your Planets and creating roadblocks to your expansion. Once you get going though its allot of fun. The hours will melt away.

Great game! Sword of the Stars focuses on commanding the galaxy with 5 races with their own unique way of traveling the stars. To win, you need to successfully explore, colonize other worlds, research new technologies and use strategies against your enemies. Some neat features I like compared to other games is the random tech tree. You are never guaranteed to get the same weapons two games in a row. You also gain the ability to potentially salvage technology from the wreckage of your enemies.

The game is also set up so that each update to the game is not just about bug fixes, but an evolution time wise in the grand scheme of things. Unknown Alien Menaces evolve, new races show up, more powerful weapons appear, etc.

Sword of the Stars is a game produced from a small developer on a limited budget - yet it is far better than many of the titles put out by the big guys like EA or Activision. Simple management, smooth interface, oppenents that actually play different, and a variable tech tree make this a great game with lots of replay.

It's good to see a small company with limited funds put together such a great game.

I am addicted to this game. The strategy is deep, multi-layered, and perenially fresh; and the tactical battles range from calculated precise maneuvers to visceral rampaging bullet-storms. While it may take a bit of effort to learn at first, it's a game that you'll keep playing for a very long time. Especially if you play a lot of multiplayer games. There's a lot of devious players out there with lessons for you. :)

Fun game with a good interface and good graphics. The AI seems to be pretty competent. The documentation is lacking, so you will need to look online to find everything you need. More of a war game than a strategy game like MOO2, so it lacks some of the economic and diplomatic options.

No real ifs and buts about it. I've been a fan of the this iteration since it came out and have all of the individual games/expansions. Having a Collector's Edition simply rounds out my collection.

The novel is also an added bonus; a nice short read and side-introduction to the Sword of the Stars universe.

If you already have all expansions, getting this piece isn't really necessary unless you really want the novel. Otherwise, it's a great way to complete the set.
