I was waiting a long time in anticipation of this game. I've always been interested in the Wii's potential as a good sword-swinging simulator. When the motion plus accessory came out, I enjoyed the Wii Sports Resort Swordplay game, though it was limited -- just one game among many on one disc. Red Steel I was very disappointing, though I did thoroughly enjoy Red Steel II (and still enjoy that game for an occasional swordplay romp). To note: I'm just giving this background so the reader knows my own experiences and biases. When I heard about the development of Swords and all its promises of finally being "the" game that maximizes the Wii's Motion Plus potential for the most authentic possible sword experience, I was counting down the days for the release. After all that hype and waiting, the end result was total disappointment. For one, you can't even go through one opponent without needing to re-calibrate your Motion Plus. It's extremely frustrating to just start figuring out how to defeat one opponent just to find that your sword is pointing off into the distance in a manner completely unrelated to how you're actually holding the controller. Re-calibration was an issue with the Sports Resort Swordplay game but in actual practice Swords de-calibrated far more often than any other game I've played. That aside, there is no realistic swinging motion. There are in essence only 7 sword slashes allowed in the game -- instead of the sword doing what you are doing with the controller you have to adjust yourself to the limited options of the game. The opponents are not that challenging, the new swords unlocked after the defeat of an opponent aren't particularly exciting, and ultimately, once you do get a hang of the game it all boils down to learning to block and counterstrike. Once you get that down, all the opponents fall fairly readily and the game is over before you know it. It just barely gave me two hours of game play before becoming insufferable -- all opponents defeated and absolutely zero feeling of satisfaction. Frankly the Wii Sports Resort Swordplay games offered far more challenge and variety than was ever presented with Swords, a game that I consider a total failure.

Best Sword on the Wii

when i got my wii for christmas last year, i was expecting a lot more games that let you swing a sword. i was very disappointed in the red steel games which weren't really letting you use the full motion of a sword. wii sports resort did a better job, but still not really exploring it in depth.

i picked this up as a means of making myself feel like my previous purchase of a MotionPlus wasn't wasted. after playing it, the one thing i can say is that this is the best motion-controlled sword thats been done on yet. you have full control over the boy's sword and it lets you duke it out with a lot of different opponents. the minigames are really fun and add a lot of veriety to the game. i didn't try the two-player because i dont have two motion pluses, but that sounds like a lot of fun. also, the music was awesome.

all in all, it was totally worth [...] bucks and i finall get to feel like im hitting someone with a sword when i play a game.

Big Disappointment

This game is pretty messy for a retail disc game. It feels more like a wiiware download game for its low production value. The wii remote needs to be re-calibrated 2 or 3 time PER ROUND, and each opponent is at least 2 rounds, sometimes 3. The sword play is not true 1:1, it really boils down to flicks of the wrist in 7 directions, and there's a notable delay in reacting to your moves. I found myself making 4 sword slashes and the game would only make 2. I was doing terrible standing up and acting like it was a sword simulator. After being frustrated and sitting down on the couch, and merely flicking the remote in tiny movements, the game became a breeze. One and a half hours into it, after opponent number 7, the game ends. This game was extremely short. I'm really glad I only paid $4 for it. Any more than that and I would have been ripped off, big-time.

The sword play on Wii Sports Resort is far superior to this game. If you love the Wii Sports Resort sword play, don't look to this game to improve on any of what you've already experienced.
