It's complicated and the tutorial videos do help but in the end trial and error is how you're going to have to figure it out. If you're like me and have worn out just about every other genre of game out there this is a good one to begin exploiting.
The game is designed for multiplayer but it has singleplayer too against AI opponents and the AI is good. There is no real campaign to speak of. If there is I have yet to find it. There are a bunch of apparently unrelated scenarios but the real gem of this game is the custom designing. You can create galaxies, the number, size and distance of planets, numbers of alien races, etc, etc. All in all it's a great game. It's one of the few that I could see myself giving a solid 5 stars but to me 5 stars implies perfection and there is no such thing as perfection, however, the developers of this game seem to have gone to great length to provide a quality game for us grown folks that like to use our heads for something other than a pin cushion.
My only beef with this game is that it is so addictive. You think you can play it just a little bit and put it away whenever you want to but that's not how it works. What happens is that in the evening when you get some free time you'll fire this thing up and the next thing you know it's 3 or 4 in the morning, your eyeballs are bleeding and your spouse is headed out the door with a suitcase. Surely you can see how all this is a problem.
EDIT: I feel like I should edit this for people unfamiliar with these kinds of games. I know they show a lot of cool screenshots up top there and you will see some really cool energy weapons being employed during the fighting but you're going to find that a large portion of your time in any game like this will be spent analyzing data (intelligence, economic, environmental, etc.), researching technology, designing and buildinging ships, transporting goods, negotiating treaties, etc. It's not just a bunch of space battles but an empire builder. The warfare is but one aspect of it, NOT the core of the game, however, it is still very good. I think these things should be pointed out so that the buyer isn't under the impression that this is a space-based action game. End of edit.
Graphically it's a bit dated but you'll soon forget about that, trust me. It has a tendency to be a little on the silly side too but under the circumstances that you'll be under in this game (nuking, bio-attacking or otherwise annihilating entire planets and killing all or most of it's innocent civilians) I think a little comic relief is refreshing.
So anyway, if you like these turn-based strategy games or are someone just looking for a change of pace, I can't recommend this game enough.
Sword of the Stars. This is one of the best 4X space games ever. Explore. Expand. Exploit. Exterminate.
You will search the stars for new colony spots. Send out colony ships. Deal with 'space' disasters. Build Warships. Negotiate with alien kingdoms (this part is kind of weak, though). Be attacked. And Wage War. What else could you hope for in a strategy game?
The initial learning curve is steep. Start small, say 100 to 150 stars, spiral galaxy and four total races. Oh, and on Easy.
The main concepts are Expansion and Research. These are Vital to your survival. After that comes Ship Design and Combat. SotS has Great ship design mechanics. Multiple weapon slots, different types of weapons, and size all matter. Get Cruisers as soon as you can! They make a huge difference. Armor is also important but will drive ship costs up. Still, armor techs increase your survival capability in combat. By the way, the Technology Tree is randomized each game. Kinda neat.
Combat has you in space, either against other fleets or assaulting/defending a planet. This is real time, but pausable. You can control the targets of the various vessels. This is easy with larger ships. I love seeking torpedoes!
Exploiting comes from mining 'dead' planets for their resources and taking them back to a large, well-resourced world, increasing that world's production capability. Time consuming but necessary to get an upper hand.
Exterminating is simple: Choose your targets and set forth with a vast fleet!
SotS has multiple races, and each uses a slightly different space drive system. There are some serious differences. The Humans, for example, use Star Lanes while the Hive uses Space Gates. The Liir and Tarka use a similar to each other direct-to-star system. I like the Liir and Human fleets. I like their star drive systems and their overall ship combat slots. Whichever race you choose will be fun! And, with the Complete Collection, new races are now available!
Sword of the Stars is both Strategic, on the star map, and Tactical, in battle. Strategic is turn-based, so you have lots of time to do what you need. Space Battles are real-time, and you can choose how long the battles will last during game set-up. I prefer longer battles.
This is a good game. It is a little old but graphics were always nice. Sound is great, too; each race has their own music that plays as you run your Empire.
In any event, Sword of the Stars Complete Collection is a long game for strategy - and tactical - lovers everywhere. It is definately one of the best 4X space strategy games ever. And, yes, I was around when Master of Orion the Original came out.
Playing Sword of the Stars is both Epic and Great Fun!
September 2013 EDIT: Just installed this on a new Win7 64-bit system --- it runs!
