Best Connectivity ExpressCard to Firewire

I purchased this, as it was the least expensive device on Amazon. Unfortunately, the chipset in this device was not compatible with my Presonus Firewire Studio. If you are looking for same application, the VIA chipset will not work.

This card works great! I have a Lenovo T4200 that isn't supposed to be certified to run Windows 10. Windows 10 runs fine except for the internet connection doesn't work well at all especially on the internal LAN. It would start to gack when I tried to open several internet pages even with 8GB of RAM. The issue is Lenovo doesn't support drivers for Windows 10. I plugged in this card and didn't even have to load any drivers, it just fixed my LAN issues and Web pages are loading the way they should now.

Great card, you should get it if you want to hook directly to your router or use LAN.

Bad design or bad unit?

I bought this unit because it claims Linux compatibility (it is stated on the package). I run a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. Under both operating systems, this card was less than ideal.

First, it was significantly slower than other cards I had and topped out at about 50 MB/s, where the same setup of drives with a SIL3132 based card reached more than 70 MB/s sustained "real life" transfer rate.

Second, I got random disconnects of the card from the OS. Usually, these happened after many hours of operation. Because I never run Windows that long, I had these disconnects with my Linux installation only (which doesn't have this problem with another card). These disconnects caused some file system errors, that were relatively easy to correct.

Third, under Windows 7, this card caused MASSIVE file system corruption to an NTFS volume. Only the backup helped to restore that volume

Conclusion: it may be possible that I had a bad unit, but in that case I have my doubts about quality control - especially because I found some debris (droplet of solder) stuck in one of the eSATA jacks when I received the card, using the card (or testing it) was only possible after removing that debris. Alternatively, the design might be flawed, wich is even worse. Even though Amazon just dropped the price to a record-low $8.99 I doubt that this card is worth the potential headache.

Great little device!

Style: Serial DB9Verified Purchase

I purchased this adapter because I need the ability to console into networking equipment from time to time. I've used a couple different USB-to-Serial dongles that either didn't work, work once, or would caused BSOD on my machine if too much was written to console at once, it was extremely frustrating. Bought this little guy on its claim of having a native serial controller running through the PCI-E bus, so no emulation layer to goof things up, and I'm glad I did! Haven't had any issues with drivers (running Windows 7 32- and 64-bit systems), just using the ones provided on the little mini CD provided with the card, and haven't run into any serious problems with the device's operation. Have run at both 9600 and 19200 bit rates without a problem. The only thing to be weary of is the device often installs as COM3 or COM4 instead of COM1 it seems. But overall, this is a wonderful little adapter that works great and didn't cost an arm and a leg as some of the devices of this type seem to for some reason. Long-term durability might be a concern with a somewhat flimsy plastic housing jutting out the side of a laptop fumbling around on the data center floor, but as with anything, as long as you're careful and pay attention, it should hold up quite well, I've been using mine since April 2011. Highly recommended, a great product... just make sure you know the difference between ExpressCard and Cardbus/PCMCIA...

Just what I needed

Just what I needed. Typical scenario - Have a HI8 camcorder recording digital. Needed a way to get the video off this old unit before nothing can and place the video onto the hard drive. New Laptops don't have firewire. It was a $20.00 investment so no great loss. Did what it said it could do. I had no issues setting this up. First of all I thought it would not fit into the express card on my laptop. It did fit. My windows 7 laptop found it. When I plugged my Camcorder into it (powered on of course), the card and windows 7 detected the Camcorder and an import window opened automatically and let me start copying immediately. The neat thing I like is that (may be a windows function) it creates a video file for every recorded scene. So you don't have to manage really large AVI files. I bought the TOTMC® USB 2.0 Video Capture Adapter for my VHS tapes but did not want to use this for the HI8 because I wanted to go from Digital to Digital (makes a difference).
