I've purchased about a dozen StarTech CF-IDE adapters for various retro computers but I decided to try the Syba since it was half the cost and I didn't need a drive bay.

I'm happy to say it works perfectly in my 20 year-old retro computer (an old AMD computer from 1997). I'm using this card with a SanDisk 16 GB CF and, unlike some of the super-cheap cards, this DOES send the HDD activity indicator to the motherboard so the LED does work properly. The overall build quality seems good and the CF card rails are deep enough so I don't feel like I'm going to bend the pins. Inserting and removing the card is smooth. The slot opening does come rather close to the edge of my case's back bracket but I didn't run into any clearance issues with my particular PC case.

My search for a rear case mounted CFC >to> IDE adapter found this.

► NOTE - this review is for the style "by bracket", ADIDE2CF-A2 & not for "by cable" or "by direct".

The pros:
+ Reasonably priced at $9.95 with free shipping when I bought mine.
+ 3 on board LED - card detect, activity & power.
+ CFC voltage selection for +5.0V or +3.3V.
+ On board jumper configuration for IDE jumper settings for master or slave mode.
+ Supports Ultra DMA mode.
+ Compatible with CompactFlash Type I, Type II & Micro Drives.
+ Low power consumption.

The cons:
- Per the User Manual - "This adapter does NOT support hot insertion of CF cards"
- Would not fit our IBM PS/1 rear case slot? The adapter bracket had the CFC slot too far to one side, so the CFC couldn't be inserted!
- The on board CFC activity LED works, but oddly, the activity signal is NOT passed thru to the computer IDE controller. This means the case mounted activity LED will NOT indicate CFC activity!
- Supports only 40-pin IDE interface. No socket installed for 44-pin cable.
- No power cable is provided.
- No IDE ribbon cable is provided.
- No case slot hardware is provided.
- The instruction booklet print is very small.

CFC - CompactFlash card information:
▪ CompactFlash cards come configured to two different modes:
[1] "Removable Disk Mode"
[2] "Fix Disk Mode"
▪ Normally Commercial CF cards are set to "Removable Disk Mode" & Industrial CF cards are set to "Fix Disk Mode". This varies between manufactures, so it best to verify the mode of the CF card you purchase.
▪ CF card with "Fix Disk Mode" is used as a permanent data storage device. Use this card for creating fixed partitions, installing operating systems, or creating a bootable drive.
▪ Windows operating system will not place system files on a removable disk, so it's important to use only CF cards which are set to "Fix Disk Mode".

Closing remarks:
▪ I had to modify the bracket, moving the CFC about 1/16 inch to clear the case. This required filing the bracket & using washer to space the adapter board over 1/16 inch. This was annoying, as the computer is an IBM PS/1 & has the standard slot opening size.
▪ Not passing thru the CFC activity signal to the IDE controller is curious. I sent Syba technical support this question, but no reply was forthcoming.
▪ The above issues was the reason for the 2 out of 5 rating stars.

Update:
► 05-01-21 - This modification & CFC - CompactFlash card is still working perfectly!

First off, I ordered both the Syba and Startech version of the same product. To my surprise they are exactly the same. See in the photo. My guess is they're made by the same manufacturer and the only differentiator is the company's sticker on the back.

As such, both work equally -- DMA mode cannot be enabled in Windows 98 SE, however, UDMA mode works by default in Windows 2000. My guess is W98 is just more picky with regards to mainboard drivers for the IDE BUS. No hassles otherwise. Works as advertised.
