This is about as cheap as you'll get for a functioning SATA add-on card. I use it to boost the number of critical SATA II plugs available on my motherboard, where the RAID controller I'm actually using is housed. As a result, I don't mind the slow bus speed, crappy RAID controller (though I haven't personally tried it), or the pair of SATA I plugs on this card. It's just handling a big lumbering storage drive and some DVD combo drives, which it does a fine job of. It takes a while to boot, but otherwise it works as advertised.
Still, this thing is CRAP. It uses an over-aggressive bus mastering service to boost transfer speeds on paper, which gives predictably shaky read/write speeds. The noise introduced to the South Bridge by the mastering also ruins my analog audio output, causing almost constant pops and dropouts, as well as occasional grinding stutters on all audio channels. I've thoroughly tested all configurations of my setup and identified this card as the source of the issues -- as you plug more devices into it, the noise gets worse.
It basically makes the machine unusable for media playback. I "solved" the problem by dropping in a much higher wattage PSU which seems to just steamroll over the noise by introducing a more consistent base-line power to the board, but you can still perceive some very low level pops during complex audio signals.
I would NOT recommend this card to anyone who wants professional or enthusiast level media functionality, but if you're just using it as a dumb HTPC / media server like I am and you don't mind overcoming the bus mastering then the lazy engineering is excusable for the price.
