Best of breed for MacBook Pro

This eSata/USP ExpressCard interface works on MacBook Pros without installing any drivers -- as a result you can boot from an eSata drive connected with it.

Excellent!

It also adds yet another USB2 port, through clever re-use of the connector. I don't know how many Macbook Pro users have any need for a 4th USB port, but you never know. Note however that you can only use the one connector for one function at a time -- it is either a USB2 port or an eSATA port, but not both at once. (No switching is involved -- a USB plug mates up with the USB functionality and an eSATA connector only sees the eSATA connections).

Other than that, there isn't much to say -- it Just Works, which is highly admirable.

If you have a MacBook Pro with the ExpressCard interface, this is your card.

Mac Compatible? Sometimes!

I purchased this ExpressCard to provide fast connection to a very fast external hard drive that I use for my working files when doing movie/video projects away from the office. When I first connected it to my MacBook Pro it loaded its internal drivers. I then connected a harddrive to it and it crashed my Mac. After a bit of research, I found that this was a common occurrence and that an updated driver was available. I downloaded and installed that updated driver and the harddrive connected successfully. However, since then, I have had several occasions where the harddrive lost its connection to the Mac (a very bad think when working with large files). It has also crashed my Mac a few times. I've basically discontinued using the device until I have some more time to debug the problem. I could not recommend this device for anyone except a hard core IT expert. The problems just are not worth the time it takes to overcome them.

Gave up on it with my MBP

I bought this to use with my 17" MacBook Pro (2010 model, running Snow Leopard)), and while it did connect to my drive for a while, it would drop the connection (sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours). It didn't seem to be dependent on whether or not I was using the machine at the time. Some people claim heating issues, but I can't verify that. I gave up on eSata with my MBP and just went with Firewire, which while more expensive (and theoretically slower), has never given me any issues whatsoever.

Doesn't work after 4 days' usage

I bought it for my thinkpad X230, as there is no esata port on it.

Though it will take one or two minutes when I connect it to my Seagate Freeagent Pro esata port, at first 4 days, it can work properly. The speed is good, and stability is good too.

But after 4 days' usage, it never recognize my freeagent pro. I also test it on other machine with different esata devices, and make sure this is caused by this adapter.

I then return it.

One pro: the port has a good compatibility of with various esata/sata cable :). I have a weird esata cable, which can be only used in this device.

acceptable but .......

You receive what payed for.
Work (not all the time) but his driver is unestable.
Sometimes work in a computer sometimes not (we connect all and we do not see the disk in the computer)
But when the the computer see the esata + disk wark ok
I think is due to the lack off specialized hardware (justified by the price) and heavy relay in the computer sata hardware.
With the delivered drivers almost unusable
With the new driver was usable.
Buyed an equivalent product from other manufaturer (More than twice the price) and now I use the original adapter for backup.

Finicky, but fast...

I agree with the other reviewer who calls this card finicky. Also running on the pre-unibody MBP and it is plug-and-play, and it can be very fast (I've seen 80MB/sec sustained)... but it gets extremely finicky when it's hot. Transfers decreasing amounts of data until it gets down in the kilobytes... and then it takes minutes just to unmount a drive (or Finder completely locks up). If it were worth the hassle, I'd return and look elsewhere.

Doesn't work when it overheats.

I use a Macbook Pro 2007 Model, and it simply stops working when it is overheated. So for smaller files, it works fine, but as soon as the laptop gets heated, you lose this card. It works, but wouldn't suggest buying it unless you have an ice box under it. (It is compatible, but just a little glitchy? Don't know how to describe it.)
