Sylvia Plachy: Goings On About Town: Photographs for The New Yorker Hardcover – October 1, 2007

4.7 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Sylvia Plachy was the first photographer ever to be assigned to shoot the opening picture of the essential Goings On About Town section of The New Yorker. She did so for more than a year, in conjunction with the legendary magazine's front section redesign of 2005. From the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island to Forest Park in Queens, from backstage to center stage, in Goings On About Town, Plachy explores the city's dynamics from the inside out, revealing the vital, and, at times, wacky creativity that energizes New York City around the clock. In so doing, she presents hidden gems that most of us never have a chance to see up close--like Macy's New Jersey workshop for the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. Plachy's humor and way of looking is particularly suited to such offbeat assignments. Almost entirely in color, this volume also includes some images that have never been published before. Joyful and idiosyncratic, Goings On About Town is quintessentially Plachy, and quintessentially New York.

Review

"The city, as seen through the eyes of Plachy and the New Yorker, is a sort of visual version of HBO's Sex in the City. It is alive with images searching for the essence of the Big Apple and covers the gamut of emotional responses to living in a 24hr ant hill." --PhotoIcon

"In all modesty, Sylvia Plachy tries to vanish behind the lens--yet somehow she seems to be inside the picture, the genie that lets loose its swirling, slightly off-balance energy. Her Goings On About Town showcases the Hungarian-born, New York-based photographer's realistically rhapsodic vision of a city where, in her words, you can 'step out and chase your dreams.'" --O: The Oprah Magazine

"Action photos--of dancers, musicians, athletes, tourists, and others in blurry motion--look how you always hope your own snapshots of city life will: taut, packed with life, and effortlessly artful. The other photos are more contemplative. When Plachy's New Yorkers pause, they don't look lost, as you might expect, but rather insulated by the city's novelty and noisy, unbuttoned charm." --Metropolis Magazine

"Plachy... records with mercurial humor a charming variety of New York life: e.g., performers of all types, on stage and behind the curtains; children and workers in museums; and outdoor pleasure grounds. Her abiding love of the cultures and landscapes making up the New York region is here manifest." -- Douglas F. Smith --Library Journal

I have seen quite a bit of Plachy's magazine work. For some unexplained reason, I had until recently never purchased any of Plachy's books. When I saw that Plachy had a book including some of her New Yorker work, I could not resist. This book will not disappoint as it contains some great photography. Oh yes, my book came autographed, which was a rather pleasant surprise.
