SOLUTION for "toilet bowl" effect of a broken copter
    4 out of 5 stars
SOLUTION for "toilet bowl" effect of a broken copter
These copters are SO MUCH FUN. But the first two that I bought, after a few too many spectacular crashes, developed a crippling problem called the "toilet bowl effect." They lose their gyroscopic stability and start swirling around (as if they are in a flushing toilet bowl) in a way that makes them impossible to control.I googled this problem, and I tried a few things that DIDN'T work (it's not because lubrication is needed, or because the rotor shaft is loose, or because the balance bar is bent or needs to be replaced). The REAL reason for the problem is subtle breakage in a key part of the upper rotor assembly. It's not the balance bar that needs replacing, but a plastic molded part that is a point of common connection for the central rotor shaft, the upper pair of wings, and the balance bar. I've attached a photograph of the part and HOW IT BREAKS. That is, two tiny arms of the piece snap (the two broken parts are shown). It is very difficult to SEE this breakage because it is mostly hidden, but a careful examination will reveal that this break destabilizes the upper rotor assembly.SOLUTION: Buy the "commonly needed" replacement parts. They're just $5 on eBay (you'll get much faster free shipping from U.S. based suppliers on eBay, because the suppliers here on Amazon are all based in China). Make sure you have a small screwdriver set, and get to work. A little bit of silicone spray lubricant (not WD40, because that will attract gunk) can't hurt. Note that because of small variances in part sizes and screw sizes, I found it best to replace as much of the entire upper motor assembly as you can, rather than just this one piece that breaks. Also note that the replacement kits that I got didn't have every single part (namely, missing the horizontal brackets that hold the wings). Now, instead of two duds plus one functional, I have THREE working copters! Hope this helps.(Oh, and I rate this toy 4 stars, and not 5 because of lack of instructions for how to deal with what seems to be a very common and fixable problem.)

These little helicopters are a lot of fun to play with and seem to be able to withstand quite a beating. We purchased several of these to give as "stocking stuffers" at Christmas as well as a couple for ourselves just for fun.

The instructions that come with this helicopter are a little lacking, but this is not a complex toy. Helpful hints missing from the instructions:
    * Leave the unit level when you turn it on for a few seconds. There will be a very small blinking green light visible from the back of the unit that will stop flashing after a few moments. This is the gyro level-setting.
    * To change channels of the helicopter (A vs B), make sure both the helicopter and remote are powered off. Set the channel you wish to use on the remote and power the remote on first with the throttle lever at idle. Power on the helicopter and move the throttle to the "open" position. After a brief moment, the helicopter will change channels and is available for use.

    DURABILITY
These are durable but not indestructible. Take care when flying in a room with a lot of obstacles. Even slight changes in airflow in a room will change the flight dynamics of these small, lightweight helicopters. Due to their small size and relatively low powered motors, attaching anything to the helicopter could very easily prevent it from flying and at the very least will make it more difficult to control.

    BATTERY
The helicopters can be charged from the included USB cable or from the included power-port on the remote. I would advise charging with the USB cable because charging from the remote will quickly drain the remote's batteries.

Regarding the USB charger, there is a little light in the USB side of the cable provided that will light up when charging is finished. The LED is not externally visible on the charger cable.

The way you fly your helicopter will influence how long the battery lasts, but we are averaging roughly 5 to 7 minutes. Charging takes roughly 45 minutes for my helicopters.

To maximize the life of the rechargeable battery, allow your helicopter to "rest" for 5 to 10 minutes after a flight before plugging it in for a charge.

Take care when plugging the cable into the helicopter to charge as the pins are very very small and I could see where it could be easy to damage them if you're too rough with it. On the charging cable (both on the remote and the USB cable) there is a small arrow/triangle on the top of the plug. Plug into the helicopter with this arrow/triangle facing up.

    FLIGHT AND CONTROL
These helicopters quite stable and easy to fly. It does take a little finesse to learn just how much throttle you should give these, but the learning curve is minimal and you'll have it figured out during your first flight.

As you fly (and crash... because yes, you will crash these repeatedly) you should expect little tiny nicks in the plastic blades and plastic body pieces. These will impact flight characteristics over time but very minimally. You can pick up a set of replacement pieces for very little money here on Amazon. I think the last time I looked it was maybe $3 or less.

IF YOU HAVE PETS WITH LONG HAIR -- keep an eye on the rotor shaft and pull any tangled animal hairs or fibers out from around the shaft regularly.

With very little maintenance and care, I see no reason why these shouldn't last for quite a long time. The availability of very inexpensive replacement parts here on Amazon means you should be able to enjoy a great many flights with these units.

    My first impressions

The packaging is simple but the wire holding the helicopter to the packaging can be a little annoying. Nonetheless the helicopter comes assembled so all you need to do is add batteries (6x AA) to the remote controller and in my case I turned the helicopter to the (On) position and it started right up.

This is a 3 Channel Remote Controlled device meaning that you control 3 functions of the helicopter. This is sufficient because it allows you to control lift (up/down), yaw (left/right) and pitch (forward/backward).

I got to observe how the helicopter functions. While knowing already the properties of real helicopters I was curious why RC Helicopters were designed in such a way. The blades collapse freely which helps with protecting them from damage in the event they come in contact with something and the momentum of the motor keeps them extended when operating. The reason for two tier bladed design is to allow the Helicopter to yaw (rotate left/right) by speeding up one set of blades or the other. The knob on the controller also helps trim this function so that the helicopter won't rotate undesirably when flying. The tail rotor which in a typical helicopter helps overcome the rotational force of the main rotor, but in the RC Helicopter it allows the pitch (forward/backward movement). The weighted bar on the very top of the blades balances the helicopter so that it stays level and right-side up.

The construction of this is rather sturdy and for the price I paid ($13 Amazon Warehouse deal) I have no complaints what so ever. This is a fun toy and interesting to play around with. Learning how it flies will result in several crashes but even after some hard hits all I needed to do was adjust the skid (landing gear) because it was a little bent. Replacement parts seem to be widely available and the helicopter does come with 1 spare rear rotor blade. Battery replacements will require some soldering.

I was able to get about 2 minutes of flight time (and crashes) on the pre-charged battery which was a nice little treat. Charging time indicates 45-50 minutes and despite all the colorful lights the helicopter makes when plugged in and having the helicopter (On), it will NOT charge unless the helicopter is turned to the (Off) position. The USB light indicator will turn (on) when the helicopter is fully charged. For the price this is an easy buy for anyone who is into RC stuff and helicopters and you don't have to feel guilty about the price being so low because it's pretty well made.

    Flight tips:

Pre-flight checks: Before taking off allow the blades to spin enough to where the helicopter won't lift but you can see whether or not it is rotating left or right. Make your adjustments to the trim knob accordingly until the helicopter remains stable and doesn't rotate. Proceed to fly but you may need to adjust the trim knob during flight as the power levels go down on the battery.

Small adjustments: The adjustments are very sensitive so naturally you will want to over correct when you feel you cannot control it properly. With time and practice you will notice how easily maneuverable and responsive that this RC Helicopter is.

Rotor wash: This is something to be aware of when in close proximity to the ground or an object. The rotors create a downward thrust which gives it lift but when close to an object or the floor this thrust is reflected back up into the blades which can give it unstable characteristics. If trying to challenge yourself and perform landings on various precise locations it's important make very small adjustments and descend gradually.

More than a dozen flights under my belt this helicopter will remain in the air for roughly 4-7 minutes. I haven't had any luck trying to cargo-lift objects so it doesn't have enough thrust I imagine. The
Syma S107C Spycam 3.5 Channel RC Helicopter with Gyro (Colors May Vary)  I suspect has a more powerful motor which enables it to carry the camera it comes with. Charging time is right around 50 minutes and I use one of those AC USB wall plugs that smart phones typically come with now days as opposed to a computer with no adverse effects. Smacking into the corners of walls, bouncing off cabinets, tumbling to the ground from a 4-5ft drop has done little to scar this helicopter. The landing gear might need a little adjusting from time to time and the blades show very minimal wear considering the abuse. A very well made birthday or christmas gift in my opinion and at this price point you cannot go wrong.
