Covering astronomy, demonology, witchcraft, ancient magic, and much more, this book serves as a directory to decoding over 500 signs, symbols, and icons of the occult.

Mark Stavish, Director of Studies

Mark Stavish, the Director of Studies for the Institute for Hermetic Studies, is a life-long student of esotericism with over 35 years experience in comparative religion, philosophy, psychology, and mysticism with emphasis on Traditional Western Esotericism. His articles have appeared in academic, specialty, and mass market publications specializing in spiritual studies, making Mark one of the leading authorities in Hermeticism today.

In addition to being a member and officer of several prominent Rosicrucian and Martinist societies, Mark served as the Director of Research for the Occult Research and Applications Project, of the Philosophers of Nature (PON). The Philosophers of Nature was founded by Jean Dubuis in France in 1979 and for twenty years was the leading resource for practical information on mineral and plant alchemy, as well as qabala. ORA, a statistically based research wing of the American branch of PON performed detailed exploration into the validity and practicality of various traditional esoteric methods. Original research from the ORA Project was published in the organization’s journal, The Stone.

Mark has been a return guest on Coast to Coast AM (C2C), Just Energy Radio, and Animal Planet/History Channel, as well as been a consultant for documentaries and print article dealing with spirituality.

A graduate of King’s College, in Theology (B.A.), and Communications (B.A.), and Rhode Island College (Providence), with a Master’s degree in Counseling emphasizing psycho-spiritual modalities and Psychosynthesis, Mark brings a unique blend of tradition with modern research to the application of esoteric philosophy.

Wow, I haven't been able to put this down in days! While this book could have gone into a little more detail on some of the symbols, its an excellent starting point with many references to the works one may consult next for a deeper dive. And what student of the occulted & mystical doesn't love a good book-hopping session when in pursuit of gnosis? I would have loved to hear the Aboriginal Australians divination Stone stories, just a little synopsis of each one would have been super cool because I'm having trouble finding that information (seems strange to have such trouble with the whole Internet existing, but I did attempt it and failed) and am not as knowledgeable about this as I'd like to be. All the same, I am so impressed with this book, the range of time and cutures covered is really engaging and unintentionally invites a fun connect-the-dots game that most people interested a book like this will likely recognize and want to play around with too. So it's really fun on top of obviously being very useful. This book will be a cherished assistant in my studies for many years to come and I can't recommend it enough.

If you're needing a reference for practical symbols that are actual sigils or actually in regular use. This is the book! Many other symbols books contain a bigger variety of symbols that are obscure in an uninteresting way. Instead using quanity to mask quality.

After much trial and error, this is the first book that is Symbol centric, that I'm actually satisfied with! Though, as thankfully mentioned in other comments. This book is not without its own basis. So bring your own open-mindedness to the table. Any Symbols that catch you eye, do a quick Wikipedia search to learn a bit more.

But I guess it is start somewhere. The rest is up to you to research.
Even has an index as well.

It did not have the level of detail I thought it would. Extended definitions and meanings for individual symbols are not in the book.

It’s more like a brief incorrect history/intro to symbols of the world. I definitely wouldn’t have wasted my money on this had I known it was written with such bias and misinformation.

I like how this book is set out. You can read a small amount at a time and go back to it really easily. Concise history and is easy to consume. I also really like the cover as it looks lovely out on the coffee table if people want to have a flick through it.

Reviewed in Australia on May 16, 2023
the author doesn't take sides with the beliefs of Christianity when speaking about everything until it's about satan in the book and brings up other beliefs when talking about symbols

but they do talk about other texts like tarot cards and ancient languages if that tickles your fancy! most of it is unbiased but it doesn't get a bit biased when it gets to demons and such. other that that i'm loving this book!
