Editorial Reviews

Berlioz has been referred to as the "Volcano under the Romantics". He was indeed one of the most flamboyant personalities among the group of artists, who initiated a romantic movement, known as "Jeune France", in Paris round about 1830. The great pioneering music work in this romantic field was the "Symphonie fantastique", which Berlioz completed in 1830. The composer sub-titled this orchestral work in five movements "Episodes in the life of an artist", each of which tells a story of its own.

After thoroughly enjoying my recent purchase of Willem Van Otterloo's Original Recordings 1951-1966 (see my review), I decided to find some more CDs by the conductor. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot to choose from (which is probably why I didn't really know who he was prior to buying the box set), but this recording of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique that he made with the Berlin Philharmonic was available via the IMP reissue label. This 1951 performance was referenced in the liner notes to the aforementioned Challenge Classics set, and I can see why it has remained in print in various editions for so long. Despite its mono sound, it is a sparkling, vibrant and dynamic recording -- just check out the brass and string interplay in the signature March movement, it's fantastic! The only shortcomings here are length (only 43 minutes of music, surely there is an unreleased Otterloo French Overture that could've been tacked on) and non-existent liner notes. Otherwise, for the classical connoisseur, this is a great buy!

One of the best versions that I have heard. It is extremely fiery, replete with fury and romantic longing. It reminds
me of the Munch/RCA/BSO first SF, here with a great and too little heralded Dutch conductor and the Berlin PO
(sounding at home in Berlioz). It was also available on a Retrospective cd via the Decca Music Group Ltd
in 2005 with three excerpts from Damnation of Faust, the Trojan March and the Roman Carnival Overture
with the Lamoreux Orchestra of Paris- (RET037) . On lp the five excerpts were part of a longer Berlioz program on Philips/ Epic. CD time for
the Retrospective disc is 73 minutes,, so it is worth a hunt..

I hate to be the "dog in the manger," but I do not believe that this is the actual 1951 Van Otterloo Berlin Philharmonic recording for the simple reason that my copy of the CD is clearly stereo: not rechanneled/reprocessed/reverberation added fake stereo; but real almost hole-in-the-middle stereo, with individual instrumental choirs anchored securely in right or left channel. Also I don't get the "frisson" I remembered from listening to the LP decades ago, but that may be my own shortcoming.

Amazon reviewers in the U.S. and the U.K. seem each to hear a drastically different recording. Perhaps someone with the original Philips LP will make the comparison and set us all straight.

Edit: Van Otterloo rerecorded the symphony in 1971 with the Hague Philharmonic. Could this be that recording?
