I put the unit through the gauntlet, syncing about 3TBs in a two 4TB drive setup. It was working fine, but then I accidentally kicked the unit and the power cord came out during the madness. So here I am sweating and thinking about how I just threw away hundreds of $$$s because I am an idiot. But I powered it back up and it gave a crazy beeping sound, but it was just an alert saying that Disk 1 was not initialized --> must have come loose when I kicked it.
I clicked the manage --> repair and BOOM like magic it is back to normal! There is nothing more satisfying than a product doing what it is supposed to = Keep Your Data Safe. 5 stars for a perfect performance.
Updated Review: 7/31/2014 - 4 Star Review
I received my replacement unit today! I am happy to report that there is no blinking blue light of death. I must have gotten really unlucky or something earlier.
It was really simple to set up:
1. 5 minutes - Place the hard drives into the slots from top to bottom (there are 4 of them). Synology provides screws in case you want to make them extra sturdy (e.g. if you think there is even a remote chance of the unit shaking or being knocked you should screw them in to be secure). Note that there are two fans in the back (completely silent even with your face right next to the unit).
2. 5 minutes - Go to find.synology.com and click the unit, which should be auto-recognized if you plugged in the ethernet cables and turned it on.
3. 10 minutes - the synology will then install the latest DiskStation Manager (it appears to be a custom Operating System? e.g. Windows or Linux). Note: the default username is "admin". The default password is empty, so literally do not type anything in there.
4. Wait for the synology to create the hybrid raid (I think this just picks a raid level depending on how many drives you happen to have in the thing - I only had 2, so I assume its in a Raid 1 config.)
5. ENJOY!
I will update this review after I try to get Plex running and have a chance to load 4 TBs of data on it ASAP. So far 4 stars for being really easy and simple to set up. 1 star dinged because of earlier trouble and because I have not had a chance to put it through the data gauntlet.

I received this unit yesterday and was excited to get it started and have everything work. It flashes blue non-stop and doesn't do anything else. I searched online and it looks like a complete motherboard failure? Or it may be related to a faulty production flash issue.
I am returning the unit to Amazon for a replacement, and I will update my review upon getting the new one.
Having a DOA computer is not normal and their engineers should create some better quality control.
This is the first Raid I have owned, but I have owned other NAS devices before.
I did a great deal of research in choosing which Raid to purchase. Unfortunately, I missed one little thing that was important to me. There are other Synology Raids that are aimed at media/video serving roles. These models have a somewhat more powerful processor so that they can transcode video. They also allow for the installation of the Plex Media Server which is way better than the standard Synology media server. All of my video is pre-transcoded, so I didn't feel the need to spend the money on the more expensive media version. I didn't quite catch that Plex would not run on this version. This is at least partially my fault, but it is a bit hard to tell when reading about on the web. My solution which is working fine, is that I do have my Synology holding and serving all of the media files, but I have continued to run the Plex server on my Win7 machine. This adds a bit of network overhead no doubt, but it has run beautifully. I would love it if they would deliver a version of Plex that ONLY serves files and does not transcode.
If you are planning on doing a lot of video serving, your should probably go with the more powerful Synology devices.
The device is built well, the software is top notch. I do feel that it is pricey, but I was willing to pay it for the security that adding a Raid device adds to the protection of my files. I have files on my computer going back almost 20 years. I have a cloud based backup, but I really wanted a second backup that I was in control of, the Synology provides this backup as well as serving media files.
I have Mac, Windows, and Linux devices on my home network. The setup process is quite different for each, and so far it works well with all three. I will tell you there is a bit of a learning curve here, and it wasn't always obvious how to go about making connections between devices. If you are on Windows download the Synology Assistant which makes adding network drives MUCH easier. There is a version of this app for OS X, but it seems to be less featured, and connecting to my Mac was much more involved than the Windows setup. I would like to see some more work on this app.
PROS:
-Amazing Webmin interface
-Once setup works very well for backup and file serving
-Small and convenient to hide in a closet
-High quality case and hardware
CONS
-Kind of expensive
-Arm version does not support Plex
-Setup is not for users who do not know what they are doing
-I get some dodgy connections with my Macbook (it works then it doesn't, no explanation why)
I would buy Synology again, and probably will, though doing it over, I would probably get the more powerful processor.
I spent a long time reviewing different vendors and reading reviews. I chose Synology over another vendor (like Drobo) because they seemed to have a little more flexibility. I was worried about the "flashing blue light" but Synology's web site said it was a manufacturing problem and fixed in 2012. You can guess what happened next.....
Received the unit, installed two drives, and powered it up just fine. It has a nice interface and is easy to set up. Powered it off via the interface and got a flashing blue power light. Went through some steps I found on Synology's website and it didn't fix the problem. I am at a military address out of the U.S. and things take a while to get here, so I am really disappointed int this product and its quality. Definitely go for another vendor - if they haven't got a handle on quality control since they issued a press release in 2012, then they have a problem.
