This NAS has all the features you will ever want, and more (which is fine, given I'm sure the unused apps will get used eventually). The setup was very straight forward and the NAS was discoverable by my computer (ACER Aspire 64 Bit, Windows 7). In case you are worried about installing the drive dont worry, its a breeze and just 4 screws (they provide extra).
If you dont have a gigibit port on your computer AND a gigibit router (1000 mbps) you will get slow speeds (<100 Kb/s). If you want to upgrade to a nicer router but dont want to wait ~300 days to uploads 1tb of data hook the ethernet cable from the NAS to your port on your computer and upload the data that way, (simply log in the same way as you normally would) By doing this you will experience speeds >50 Mb/s which is great!
I havent yet tested PLEX yet on this NAS but I will soon (still uploading stuff :P) and I will update you all on it ASAP.
Overall, this is a great device and SOOOOOO much better than its competition. If you want to go cheap on a NAS you will be upset. Look no further than Synology!
UPDATE: I have had the device for about a month and my 5-star review still stands. The NAS does not overheat, Plex works great (however it won't play .avi files but will play .mkv .mp4) and it's such a great platform that really makes this NAS soar higher than the rest!
I still haven't updated my router (it's still a 100 Mbps) however if you ha w the router plugged to a 100 Mbps router you can still watch movies ON PLEX locally. Which I know that's not why we buy this product, but until I get my home network figured out this will have to do.
I would still recommend this device to anyone looking to get started and take the leap into network attached storage devices. AVOID THE WD MYCLOUD!!!!!!
3 month update:
Still working strong. This is a great NAS. You won't be disappointed. PLEX is still amazing. And watching movies on this is such a great experience. I realize that ~180 dollars is a lot for a disk less NAS. But believe me. It's worth it. And that you can choose the drives you want is a plus. (I'd recommend the WD Red drives) I'd also recommend getting 4+ TB of space. As it's tricky to upgrade later on.
